Which Cross Trainer (Elliptical) for a Commercial Gym?

by Michaël Galy / Sunday, 15 March 2026 / Published in Cardio, Vélos elliptiques pro

For a commercial gym, the right cross trainer (elliptical) has a stride length of at least 50 cm, a magnetic resistance system with an 18 kg or heavier flywheel, a reinforced steel frame rated for continuous use — and a realistic maintenance budget, because the elliptical is mechanically the most complex cardio machine on the floor. It is also the machine members who dislike running head for first: zero joint impact, combined upper- and lower-body work and a calorie burn comparable to a treadmill. Here are the technical criteria that separate a genuine commercial unit from a light-duty import.

The essential criteria

1. Stride length: the number-one specification

  • 45–48 cm (18–19″): short stride — feels like pedalling rather than striding. Acceptable at home, uncomfortable in a club for users over 1.70 m.
  • 50–53 cm (20–21″): the commercial standard, suiting around 85% of users (1.55–1.85 m). This is the minimum for club use.
  • 55–58 cm (22–23″): premium long stride — a fuller, smoother, more running-like motion for taller users and premium clubs.
  • Adjustable stride: some high-end models offer 46–58 cm adjustment — ideal for accommodating every build, at a 30–50% price premium.

2. Resistance and flywheel

  • Magnetic resistance is the 2026 professional standard: silent, friction-free and finely adjustable across 16–25 levels. Eddy-current systems are the most precise.
  • Flywheel weight: 14 kg minimum for commercial duty, 18–25 kg for optimal smoothness — a heavy flywheel eliminates the dead spots at the top and bottom of the elliptical path.
  • Drive position: front-drive gives a flatter stride and a smaller footprint; rear-drive gives a more elliptical, more natural motion in a longer machine; centre-drive is the most compact with the most natural stride, but newer and more expensive.

3. Dimensions and floor space

Type Length Width Height in use Machine weight Floor area needed
Front-drive 160–180 cm 65–75 cm 180–200 cm 80–120 kg 3.5–4.5 m2
Rear-drive 180–210 cm 65–80 cm 180–200 cm 90–150 kg 4.5–6 m2
Centre-drive 140–160 cm 70–80 cm 180–200 cm 85–130 kg 3–4 m2

Important: allow a minimum ceiling height of 250 cm. The pedals raise the user 20–35 cm above the floor — under a 230 cm ceiling, a 1.85 m user hits their head.

4. Durability and maintenance

The cross trainer is the most maintenance-intensive cardio machine, because of its articulated arms, multiple pivots, bearings and guide rails:

  • Pivot bearings: 8–12 per machine, replaced every 24–36 months in commercial use — 200–400 EUR excluding VAT per machine per intervention.
  • Rails and rollers: plastic rollers wear out in 18–24 months; polyurethane rollers last 36–48 months — replacement 100–250 EUR.
  • Drive belt: replaced every 24–36 months — 80–150 EUR.
  • Pedal arms and bushes: mechanical play appears after 24–36 months — tightening or bush replacement 100–200 EUR.
  • Annual maintenance budget per unit: 200–500 EUR — more than a treadmill and far more than an indoor cycling bike. Build it into your cardio maintenance schedule.

5. Console and connectivity

The same logic as for treadmills applies: Bluetooth and app connectivity are increasingly expected, and self-powered consoles (generating power from the stride) free you from mains sockets when positioning the machines. For the wider screens question, see our analysis of connected screens on cardio machines.

Budget comparison for four cross trainers (standard cardio zone)

Tier Unit price (excl. VAT) ×4 units Maintenance over 5 years (×4) Five-year total
Professional mid-range (Light In Fitness) 2,500 EUR 10,000 EUR 4,000–8,000 EUR 14,000–18,000 EUR
Professional premium (major global brands) 6,000–9,000 EUR 24,000–36,000 EUR 3,000–6,000 EUR 27,000–42,000 EUR
Light-duty import (class H, often marketed as “semi-pro”) 1,200–1,800 EUR 4,800–7,200 EUR 6,000–12,000 EUR (+ probable replacement) 10,800–19,200 EUR if replaced at year 3

All figures are project estimates excluding VAT. A note on “semi-pro”: the term has no basis in the applicable standard — EN ISO 20957-1:2024 recognises class S (commercial), class H (home) and class I (institutional) equipment. Machines marketed as semi-professional are, in standard terms, class H units, and their duty cycle reflects that: on a busy floor they wear out in two to three years, which is why their five-year cost matches or exceeds a genuine class S machine.

Where the mid-range professional tier wins

A direct-sale professional mid-range cross trainer — 18 kg+ flywheel, magnetic resistance, 51 cm+ stride, reinforced steel frame — delivers the best five-year total cost for most clubs. Place each unit on 15–20 mm rubber tiles to protect the floor and cut transmitted noise, and browse the current range on our cross trainers category page.

Frequently asked questions

How many cross trainers does a gym need?

Plan roughly one cross trainer per 100–150 members, and slightly more in clubs with an older or rehabilitation-oriented membership, where the no-impact motion makes it the most requested cardio machine.

Front-drive, rear-drive or centre-drive?

For most commercial floors, front-drive offers the best balance of footprint, price and serviceability. Choose rear-drive for a premium, running-like feel where space allows, and centre-drive where floor area is critical.

Why do cheap ellipticals fail so quickly in clubs?

The elliptical multiplies moving joints — arms, pivots, rollers, rails — and every one is a wear point. Class H machines use plastic rollers, light bearings and thin frames sized for a few hours per week; at 6–10 hours per day they develop play and noise within months.

What ceiling height do cross trainers require?

250 cm minimum. Pedal height adds 20–35 cm to the user’s stature, so tall members need more clearance than on any other cardio machine except stair climbers.
