Ski ergometers for commercial facilities: specification and siting

FAQ Skierg - tout comprendre sur le ski trainer (technique, HIIT, calories, choix, installation, entretien)

A ski ergometer earns its place in a commercial facility on footprint, not on novelty. It occupies roughly half a square metre, it raises heart rate faster than almost any other machine, and it loads the pulling chain and the trunk in a way that no bike or treadmill does. This guide covers what a facility manager actually has to decide: freestanding stand or wall mounting, structural fixing, noise, floor build up, maintenance and how many units a site needs.

Short answer. Specify a ski ergometer where you need high intensity capacity in a small footprint: cross training boxes, hotel and workplace gyms, studio circuits and return to play rooms. The two decisions that cost money if you get them wrong are the mounting method, because a wall fixing needs a verified structural wall, and the ceiling height, because the handles travel above head height at the top of the stroke. Our Ziva Velocity professional ski ergometer is 1,550 EUR excluding VAT.

What the machine does, and where it fits

A ski ergometer reproduces the double poling action of nordic skiing: the user pulls two handles from above head height down past the hips, with a controlled return. The load falls on the latissimus, posterior deltoids, triceps and forearms, with the abdominals, lower back and glutes working continuously to transmit force. Legs contribute through a controlled flexion and extension.

Machine Movement Dominant demand Footprint in use Impact loading
Ski ergometer Vertical double pole Pulling chain and trunk stability, very fast heart rate response Approx. 0.6 x 0.8 m plus user space None
Rowing machine Horizontal, leg driven Legs first, then back and arms Approx. 2.5 x 0.6 m None
Air bike Push and pull, arms and legs Whole body, highly explosive Approx. 1.3 x 0.7 m None
Treadmill Running Legs, cardiovascular Approx. 2.1 x 0.9 m High, repeated ground impact

The footprint line is the commercial argument. In a hotel gym or a workplace room where a treadmill cannot be justified, a ski ergometer delivers a full intensity session in a fraction of the area and with no impact loading, which also removes the structure borne noise complaints that treadmills generate in mixed use buildings.

Mounting: the decision to make before you order

Ski ergometers come in two configurations, and they are not interchangeable once the room is fitted out.

Wall mounted units save the most floor area and give the cleanest circulation, but they impose a real load on the building. The fixing takes a dynamic pull from a user applying full body force, so the substrate has to be a structural wall, concrete or solid masonry, verified by whoever is responsible for the building. Plasterboard partitions, hollow blockwork and rendered insulation are not acceptable substrates, and a fixing that pulls out is a serious incident, not a maintenance issue. Ask for the manufacturer fixing detail and the load values, and have them checked before installation is scheduled.

Freestanding stands remove that problem entirely and can be relocated as the room changes, at the cost of about 0.6 square metres more floor area and a stand that has to be stable under lateral force. In multi purpose halls, rented premises and any building where you cannot obtain a structural verification, the freestanding stand is the correct choice.

Allow at least 2.4 metres of clear ceiling height above the machine position, and check for lighting, sprinkler heads and ducting in the handle sweep. This is the most common site problem we see reported after installation.

Floor, noise and siting

The machine imposes a static load and a modest dynamic load, so a 20 mm dense rubber tile is sufficient. Our 20 mm high density tile at 1000 kg per cubic metre is 26.00 EUR per square metre excluding VAT, and the Cfl-s1 rated tile for public buildings is 42.00 EUR per square metre excluding VAT. Air resistance flywheels generate a broadband rush of air rather than an impact noise, so airborne noise is the issue rather than structure borne noise: keep the machine away from a shared wall with offices or bedrooms, and away from reception.

On quantity, one unit per 30 to 40 concurrent members works for a general facility. For a class based site, size to the class: one unit per participant if the machine appears in the programmed circuit, otherwise queueing dictates the session.

Maintenance and expected life

Item Interval Action
Flywheel cage and fan Every 3 months Blow out dust with compressed air, more often where chalk is used
Cord or strap and terminations Monthly visual, annual detailed Inspect for fraying at the handle and at the entry point, replace on first sign
Handles and grips Weekly Brush and clean, replace when the surface texture is gone
Wall fixings or stand bolts Quarterly Check torque, log the check, this is the item an inspection will ask about
Console Annually Battery replacement, firmware check where applicable

Chalk is the main wear accelerator, as it is on rowing machines. Site the ergometer away from the lifting area, or move the facility to liquid chalk.

Frequently asked questions

Is a ski ergometer suitable for unsupervised members?

Yes, with a clear technique card at the station. The two errors that cause problems are shrugging the shoulders towards the ears and letting the trunk collapse, both of which are visible and both of which a printed prompt corrects. Set the resistance damper low for general members: most people select too high a setting and fatigue their arms before their cardiovascular system does any work.

What use class should we specify?

Class S under ISO 20957-1:2024 for professional and commercial use, or class I where professional inclusive use applies. The standard defines H, S and I, plus accuracy classes A, B and C. Any supplier offering a semi professional class is using a term that does not exist.

Can it be used in rehabilitation?

It has no impact loading, which makes it attractive for return to activity work, but it loads the shoulder girdle heavily. It should be introduced under supervision where there is any shoulder history, and it is not a first line rehabilitation machine.

How long will it last in commercial service?

Seven to ten years with the maintenance schedule above, because there are few contacting wear parts. The cord and the handles are consumables; the frame and flywheel are not. Warranty runs from 2 to 5 years depending on range.
