The weight bench is the most used item on a commercial gym floor and one of the most often badly bought. Between a basic flat bench and a professional adjustable bench the difference in durability, in comfort and in after sales cost is considerable, and it is decided by five specifications that rarely appear in a sales pitch. This guide covers what to check, how many benches a floor needs, and what maintenance actually costs.
Flat bench or adjustable bench: they are not interchangeable
A professional adjustable bench, flat, incline and decline, replaces a flat bench, a fixed incline and a decline bench, so it looks like the obvious purchase. It has one drawback that is rarely mentioned: the adjustment mechanism is a wear part. In a commercial gym absorbing 30 to 50 adjustments a day, the pin and the notches fatigue within 18 to 30 months. A flat bench has no moving part at all and runs for 10 to 15 years with no mechanical maintenance.
There is also an operational argument. A gym that buys six adjustable benches and no flat bench discovers that at peak time three of them are set to zero degrees, three are set to thirty, and a member who wants flat pressing has to wait while benches sit apparently free but occupied mid set. A flat bench is always flat, with no angle conflict.
The practical rule is a mix: for a floor of four to six benches, combine two flat benches with two to four adjustable benches, and keep at least 30 percent of the fleet as dedicated flat benches. The flat bench is the workhorse, the adjustable bench is the versatile tool.

Pad width is the most overlooked of these figures. It is invisible on a photograph, it does not appear in most catalogue tables, and it determines whether a member can retract the shoulder blades and press safely.
Backrest angle and what each position trains
Most members set the backrest by feel, which is a mistake, because each angle moves the muscular target. The trends below are orders of magnitude, not universal values, since activation varies with body proportions and load.
At minus 10 to minus 15 degrees, decline, the lower sternal fibres of the pectoralis major dominate and the anterior deltoid is markedly less involved. Beyond 20 degrees of decline the head down position becomes uncomfortable and the risk of losing control of the dumbbells rises.
At 0 degrees, flat, the leverage is most favourable, which is why the heaviest loads and all strength records occur here. At 15 degrees the clavicular fibres begin to contribute with almost no loss of pressing strength, which is why experienced coaches use it. This angle only exists on benches with seven positions or more; three position benches jump from 0 to 30 degrees and lose it.
At 30 degrees, the standard incline, the clavicular head of the pectoralis is the target and the anterior deltoid contribution rises clearly. At 45 degrees the anterior deltoid becomes the prime mover and the chest recedes, so it is a chest and shoulder hybrid rather than a chest exercise; the load should be reduced accordingly. From 60 to 75 degrees the deltoids dominate, and at 80 to 90 degrees the movement is a seated overhead press, which demands a rigid backrest and a non slip seat.
How many benches your floor needs
Sizing by benches per square metre is a crude approximation. The real variable is waiting time at peak, because that is what members experience. A member occupies a bench for 12 to 20 minutes, that is three to five sets including rest, so each bench turns over three to five times an hour at peak. Above five minutes of average wait the fleet is undersized; above eight minutes members abandon the exercise or leave.
The working formula is: members present at peak, multiplied by 60 percent, divided by turnovers per hour, gives the minimum number of benches. For example 40 members at peak, times 60 percent, divided by four turnovers, gives six benches. Members present at peak generally represent 15 to 25 percent of the active membership.

Layout and maintenance
Space benches at a minimum of 1.80 m centre to centre, which leaves roughly 1.20 m clear between edges. Below that, two members pressing dumbbells clash elbows and will not use adjacent benches at the same time, so real capacity halves. Keep the dumbbell rack within 2 m of the benches, place mirrors facing the incline and adjustable benches rather than the flat benches, since a member lying flat cannot see themselves, and lay rubber gym flooring tiles underneath with reinforced thickness where dumbbells are set down.

A preventive budget of 40 to 80 EUR per bench per year, covering cleaning products, lubrication, pads and inspection, replaces a corrective spend of 150 to 350 EUR per bench per year. Over five years the difference is in the order of 200 to 400 EUR against 750 to 1 750 EUR per bench, and the preventive plan extends the service life significantly.

Which foam density should I ask for?
80 to 100 kg per cubic metre, with 6 to 8 cm of thickness. Ask for both figures, because one without the other tells you nothing about how the pad will behave after a year.
What does the rated load on a bench actually mean?
It is the combined figure: the user plus the weight lifted. Size it for your heaviest realistic member, not for the average one.
How should benches be cleaned?
Daily with a pH neutral spray. Avoid bleach and neat alcohol, both of which dry out vinyl and accelerate seam splitting. Inspect the seams monthly and replace at the first split.
How far apart should benches be placed?
1.80 m centre to centre as a minimum. Tighter spacing looks efficient on a plan and halves usable capacity in practice.
