They usually stand side by side on the cardio floor, and they answer different briefs. The upright bike is the straightforward option: the user sits on, pedals and progresses. The recumbent bike is generally specified for a less glamorous but more consequential reason: it supports the back, stabilises posture, and gives confidence to people coming back to exercise.
The difference that decides the choice
A recumbent bike distributes body weight across a seat and backrest instead of concentrating it on a saddle, supports the lower back and reduces postural strain. The practical result is that many users stay on it longer, which means more useful cardio volume per session. An upright bike keeps the rider in a cycling posture, engages the trunk more and takes up less floor space per station.
Neither is better in the abstract. The right answer comes from who is going to sit on it.
Rehabilitation and older users
For rehabilitation settings and for a membership with a significant proportion of older users, the recumbent is usually the more comfortable choice, particularly where balance is a concern or where an upright posture becomes tiring quickly. Step-through frame access, a stable seat and a supported back are what allow a user to get on and off safely and unaided, which is often the deciding factor rather than the training effect itself.
Where a facility serves clinical or supervised rehabilitation, low starting resistance and fine increments matter as much as the frame geometry: the machine has to be usable at loads well below what a general fitness member would ever select.
Weight loss and general conditioning
Both work. What actually drives results is consistency and intensity, and on that point the machine that lets someone complete 30 to 45 minutes without tensing up has a clear advantage. For a deconditioned member, that is frequently the recumbent. For a member who is already comfortable cycling and wants higher intensity work, the upright is the more direct tool.
For an operator, the sensible reading is that this is a mix question, not a choice. A cardio floor serving a broad membership carries both, in a ratio set by the membership profile rather than by preference.
The classic mistake
Approximate set-up. Distance to the pedals, seat height and backrest position are not details. A badly adjusted bike produces discomfort, then pain, then abandonment, and the member blames the gym rather than the setting. Specify machines whose adjustment is quick, clearly marked and possible from the seated position, and make the set-up part of the induction.
