1. Recycled rubber tiles: the economical and circular option
Recycled rubber tiles are made from end-of-life tyres, which is exactly why they are the cheapest way to cover a large area and the easiest specification to defend on environmental grounds. For a municipal sports hall, a school or a club working to a fixed budget, they usually win on cost per square metre before any other argument is made.

- Circular material: waste rubber is diverted from disposal and given a second life.
- Attractive price: the most economical of the three, and the gap widens as the area grows.

2. Virgin rubber tiles: maximum durability and finish
Virgin rubber tiles are produced from new rubber. The result is a denser, more consistent material that holds its finish under abrasion and impact for far longer. 3. EPDM tiles: outdoor resistance and colour freedom
EPDM is a synthetic rubber developed to survive the outdoors. It is the material specified for parks, playgrounds and terraces, where the enemy is not footfall but sunlight, rain and freeze-thaw cycling. It is also the material that gives a designer a genuine colour palette to work with.

Frequently asked questions
Is recycled rubber safe for a playground?
Yes, provided the surfacing is specified against EN 1177, which sets the impact attenuation the surface must deliver for the fall height of the equipment above it. The material family matters less than the tested thickness and the critical fall height that goes with it.
Can recycled rubber tiles be used outdoors?
They can, but they are not the strongest option there. Sustained UV and damp shorten their life, which is exactly the case EPDM was developed for. For a covered outdoor area the trade-off is more open; for a fully exposed one, EPDM is the safer specification.
How thick should the tiles be?
Thickness follows the use, not the material. Across the three families the range runs from 15 mm to 60 mm. A studio floor sits at the thin end, a free weight zone with dropped barbells at the thick end, and a playground is set by the fall height of the equipment rather than by preference.
Does virgin rubber justify the extra cost?
In a heavily used zone it usually does, because the cost that matters is the cost of relaying the floor, not the cost per square metre on day one. In a low-traffic room or a short-life fit-out, recycled tiles are the more rational buy.
Can the three be mixed in one building?
That is the normal outcome of a well-specified project: recycled tiles across general circulation and studio areas, virgin rubber in the free weight zone, EPDM outside. Specifying a single material for an entire site usually means overpaying in some rooms and under-specifying in others.
