Professional Recumbent Bikes: How to Choose for Your Gym

by Michaël Galy / Monday, 29 April 2024 / Published in Conseils d'aménagement
Pourquoi acheter votre Vélo couché professionnel chez Light In fitness

A recumbent bike is rarely the first machine an operator buys, and almost always one of the busiest once it is installed. The low step-through frame, the backrest and the wide stable seat make it the machine that deconditioned members, older users, rehabilitation clients and long steady-state riders come back to. This guide sets out what separates a club-grade recumbent bike from the rest, and how to specify one for a gym, a hotel, a residential scheme or a rehabilitation centre.

Why recumbent bikes earn their floor space

On a recumbent bike the user sits back rather than over the pedals. Body weight is carried by the seat and the backrest instead of the wrists, the lower back and the saddle, so cardiovascular work can be sustained without the joint load of running or the postural strain of an upright bike. For an operator that translates into three concrete things: a machine that suits a much wider share of the membership, a machine that supervised programmes can be built around, and a machine that runs quietly enough to sit near a reception desk or in a hotel wellness room.

It is also the cardio station with the lowest entry barrier. Users who will not step onto a treadmill will sit on a recumbent bike, which is why hotels, senior residences, medical fitness centres and municipal facilities almost always include at least one in the specification.

What makes a bike genuinely professional

The word professional is used loosely in this market. For a commercial installation, look for the following and ask the supplier to confirm each point in writing before you order.

  • Duty rating. The machine must be rated for continuous use across full opening hours, not for occasional sessions.
  • Standard. Ask for conformity with EN ISO 20957-1 class S, the class covering equipment for professional and commercial use. Class I is the professional class for inclusive access; it is a different scope, not a higher intensity tier than class S.
  • Braking system. An electromagnetic brake with self-generation or mains supply gives repeatable resistance over years of use, which matters when programmes are prescribed by watt or by level.
  • Frame and finish. Welded steel frame, replaceable contact surfaces, and a finish that survives daily cleaning products.
  • Console. Readable at a glance, with preset programmes and heart rate reading. TFT consoles are now standard on club ranges.
  • Parts and service. Spare part availability over the life of the asset is worth more than any single console feature.

The professional recumbent bikes we distribute

Light In Fitness supplies three recumbent models for commercial use. All prices are per unit, excluding VAT, and exclude delivery and installation, which are quoted per project.

Model Positioning Unit price
Bodytone EVOR2 TFT console, club range, the reference choice for a general fitness floor 4,092.90 EUR excluding VAT
Bodytone EVOR1+ TFT console, top of the Bodytone recumbent range for high-traffic sites 7,662.90 EUR excluding VAT
Lexco LR8A Professional cardio machine, robust specification for intensive club use 5,025.00 EUR excluding VAT

The full range sits in our professional cardio equipment category, alongside treadmills, cross trainers, rowers and upright bikes.

Specifying a fleet rather than a machine

A recumbent bike is bought as part of a cardio line, so decide the ratio first. A general fitness floor typically pairs recumbent bikes with upright bikes and cross trainers; a rehabilitation or medical fitness room tilts heavily towards recumbent seating; a hotel wellness room usually needs one of each family in the smallest footprint that still feels credible to guests.

Three practical points decide the layout. Access first: leave clear space on the step-through side, not behind the machine. Power next: mains-powered consoles need a socket at each position, self-generating models do not. Floor last: a recumbent bike is heavy and static, so it needs a floor that resists point loading and does not mark, which is where a rubber tile or roll specification pays for itself.

Frequently asked questions

Is a recumbent bike suitable for a rehabilitation setting?

It is one of the most commonly specified machines in that setting, because the seated position with back support allows controlled cardiovascular work under supervision. Programme design remains the responsibility of the clinical or coaching team.

How does a recumbent bike differ from an upright bike?

The upright bike reproduces a cycling position and loads the core and upper body more; the recumbent bike supports the back and removes weight from the wrists and saddle. Most commercial floors carry both, because they serve different users.

What warranty should I expect on a commercial cardio machine?

Warranty terms differ by manufacturer and by range, and they depend on the declared usage of the site. Ask for the written warranty schedule for the exact model and the exact use before you sign, and check what it says about wear parts.

Can we buy a single unit?

Yes. Single units and full cardio lines are both quoted the same way, per project, with delivery and installation priced separately.
