Description

This 50 mm puzzle tatami tile is the standard dojo floor for judo, jiu-jitsu and aikido. Fifty millimetres is the thickness at which throws and groundwork can be trained without transmitting impact to the joints, which is why it is specified for clubs practising throwing disciplines rather than striking arts alone.

The tile is made from PE foam with a compact cell structure, which gives the combination of firmness underfoot and energy absorption that a combat mat requires. It has to be firm enough to stand and pivot on and soft enough to absorb the kinetic energy of a fall, and a foam that is too soft is as unsafe as one that is too hard. The surface carries a knurled rice straw texture that provides grip for bare feet.

Waterjet cutting gives a 100 percent interlock between tiles, so the assembled floor stays stable rather than opening at the joints during a session. The tiles are reversible, which lets clubs build their own contrast areas, and they are washable, waterproof, antifungal, antibacterial and hypoallergenic. Fire classification is Dfl-S1 to the European standard.

Why the mat specification matters for safety

Falls are frequent in combat sports and are the main injury mechanism. A tatami provides a soft, damped surface that absorbs the kinetic energy of a fall and reduces the load reaching the practitioner. Mats used in training and competition have to meet strict requirements for hardness, resistance, durability and uniformity, and uniformity is the one most often overlooked: a floor made of tiles that vary in firmness is unpredictable at exactly the moment when predictability matters.

Practical operation also drives the choice of a puzzle tile over a fixed floor. The tiles do not slip, they are easy to clean, and the floor can be lifted quickly to clean the substrate underneath, which is a hygiene requirement in most club settings. The reversible construction means worn faces can be turned over rather than replaced.

Frequently asked questions

Is 50 mm the right thickness for judo?

Fifty millimetres is the usual specification for throwing disciplines. For striking arts and general martial arts training, thinner tiles are often sufficient.

Do the tiles move during training?

Waterjet cutting gives a 100 percent fit between tiles, which keeps the assembled surface stable.

What fire classification do they carry?

Dfl-S1 under the European classification, which is required in many public access buildings.
