Description
NIOBE XL is a vertical rope shaft of 1.5 m diameter formed between two hot-dip galvanised steel rings, closed at the bottom by a rope floor, with ladders and climbing ropes on both sides. The posts are spaced 4.24 m apart.
A destination at height
Most rope modules are crossed or climbed and then left. NIOBE XL gives children somewhere to arrive: the rope floor inside the shaft is a place to stand, sit and look out from, reached by a choice of ladder or climbing rope on either side. Having two different means of access matters more than it sounds, because children who cannot yet manage the rope still reach the same destination by the ladder.
- Rope shaft of 1.5 m diameter with a rope floor
- Two hot-dip galvanised steel rings shaping the shaft
- Ladders and climbing ropes on both sides

Two routes, one platform
Where a scheme has to serve a wide range of abilities without separate easy and hard equipment, dual access is the most efficient answer available. The ladder route builds confidence; the rope route builds technique; both end in the same place, which removes the social division that separate items create.
Installation and surfacing
Two posts on 1.0 m reinforced concrete footings with heavy plant access, and impact attenuating surfacing to EN 1176-1 over the whole 5.3 x 9.6 m safety area, sized against the 2.85 m free height of fall.
Frequently asked questions
Is the rope floor a platform in the sense of the standard?
It is a rope surface within the certified configuration of the module, assessed as a whole against EN 1176-1 by an independent certification body.
How many children can be in the shaft at once?
The 1.5 m diameter holds a small group. Supervised settings normally manage numbers, since the shaft is the point where a queue forms.
Can it be installed against an existing structure?
No. The safety area must remain clear on all sides and the module must not be connected to equipment it was not certified with.
