Description
The ecotile Hexagon is a professional rubber gym floor tile in a hexagonal format: 1,331 x 1,152 mm, 1.53 m2 per tile, available in 10, 20, 30 and 40 mm. It is made from 100% recycled tyre rubber, classified Bfl-s1 to EN 13501-1, and laid dry on backside locks with no adhesive and no tools.
Six edges instead of four
A standard square tile meets its neighbours on four sides. The hexagon meets on six, which distributes lateral shear more evenly and resists the joint creep that opens up on heavily used square floors under dropped bars and explosive footwork. The pattern is also immediately distinctive — a practical consideration for operators whose training floor doubles as their principal marketing image.
Choosing the thickness
- 10 mm — functional fitness, mobility, light HIIT, yoga and pilates. Thin enough to preserve proprioceptive feedback for standing technical work. Not for dropped bars.
- 20 mm — free weights, light to moderate weightlifting, machine areas. The default for most commercial gyms.
- 30 mm — mixed-use buildings. The additional mass materially reduces impact noise transmitted to the floors below, which is often a regulatory rather than a comfort question in residential, hotel and care settings.
- 40 mm — heavy drop zones, competition CrossFit, strongman. Specify where loads above 100 kg are dropped regularly.
Certification and compliance
The tile is classified Bfl-s1 under EN 13501-1, the highest reaction-to-fire class achievable by a rubber floor covering, and therefore covers Cfl, Dfl and Efl requirements as well. It also carries U.S. Green Building Council recognition and the REMADE label certifying a recycled content above 80% — the two documents most often requested in public tenders and corporate sustainability reporting. Only A2fl or A1fl requirements fall outside its scope.
Setting out: plan for the offcuts
Hexagonal setting out produces more edge waste than a square grid, because perimeter cuts are made at 120 degrees and do not always reverse from one side of a room to the other. On an irregularly shaped floor the ordered area must exceed the net area by a margin, and that margin is calculated precisely on the setting-out drawing issued with the quotation. It is the single most common source of under-ordering on a hexagonal floor.

Frequently asked questions
TOP or Standard surface?
TOP has a grain below 1 mm, giving a smooth premium appearance and less retention of dust and chalk — suited to wellness areas, reception zones and coaching studios. Standard has a 1 to 5 mm grain with higher grip underfoot and under load, which is the right choice for intensive training and weightlifting areas.
Can a single damaged tile be replaced?
Yes. The backside lock system means a tile unclips and is swapped without lifting the surrounding floor, which keeps long-term maintenance cost down compared with a bonded or rolled surface.
Is it compliant for hotels, care homes and other public buildings?
The Bfl-s1 classification covers the large majority of public-building requirements. The final decision always rests with the fire safety authority or the project inspection body, so submit the classification report with your application.
