Which Magnetic Spin Bike Is Best for RPM Classes in a Fitness Club?

by Michaël Galy / Saturday, 31 May 2025 / Published in Guides Acheteurs
Quel est le meilleur vélo de biking magnétique pour les cours de RPM en salle de fitness

Choosing the right magnetic indoor cycling bike for RPM-style classes is a purchasing decision, not a matter of taste. It comes down to how the bike brakes, how it adjusts, how quietly it runs and how it holds up to a full timetable. This guide sets out the criteria that actually matter to a club, and shows where the Bodytone MT6 professional indoor cycling bike sits against them.

What a magnetic indoor cycling bike is

A magnetic indoor bike applies resistance without any physical contact with the flywheel. A magnet is moved closer to or further from the rotating wheel, and the eddy currents it induces create the braking force. Nothing rubs, so nothing wears out and nothing squeals. The practical consequences for an operator are the ones that count: less noise, less servicing, and a resistance curve that stays identical from the first class of the day to the last.

The criteria that matter for a professional RPM bike

1. Braking system and resistance

Magnetic braking is the baseline requirement. It gives precise, repeatable control of intensity with no judder and no friction pad, which is what allows an instructor to call a specific effort level and have every rider in the room actually reach it. Friction-pad bikes drift as the pad wears and need a consumable replaced on a schedule.

2. Ergonomics

A genuine RPM bike must offer fine adjustment of saddle, handlebar and pedals so it fits every body proportion in the room. This is not a comfort detail: poor fit is the main cause of knee and lower-back complaints in group cycling, and a bike that adjusts in four axes lets an instructor set a newcomer up correctly in under a minute.

3. Performance monitoring

A console showing distance, cadence, heart rate, watts and calories turns a class into something a rider can measure and repeat. Be careful how this is specified: on most professional bikes, including the MT6, the console is a priced option rather than part of the base machine. Decide up front whether your class format needs it on every bike, on the instructor bike only, or not at all – it changes the fleet budget significantly.

4. Quiet running and smoothness

Noise matters in a studio, where the instructor voice and the music set the class. The silence comes from the drivetrain and the brake, not from flywheel mass: magnetic braking removes the pad noise and a Poly-V ribbed belt removes the chain noise. That pairing is what lets a cycling room sit next to another studio, an office floor or hotel bedrooms.

5. Robustness and stability

A heavy-gauge, robot-welded frame with adjustable levellers is what keeps a bike planted during standing sprints. Look at the rated maximum user weight as an honest proxy for how the frame was engineered – the MT6 is rated to 150 kg.

How the Bodytone MT6 answers those criteria

The MT6 is built for commercial class use rather than adapted from a consumer machine, and it is specified accordingly.

  • Precise magnetic resistance: instant, progressive adjustment with no friction whatsoever.
  • Balanced aluminium flywheel: smooth, even delivery and stability through sprints, with less rotating mass to stop in an emergency.
  • Advanced ergonomic adjustment: saddle and handlebar adjustable for height and reach, dual SPD pedals for riders with or without cycling shoes.
  • Optional connected console: displays the key metrics and pairs with training applications, supplied as an option to be quoted with the fleet.
  • Commercial-duty construction: reinforced frame rated to 150 kg, certified to EN ISO 20957-1 class S and warranted for three years.

Professional studio bikes versus consumer-market bikes

Retail indoor bikes and professional studio bikes are different products built to different duty cycles. The comparison below is by category, not by brand.

Criterion Professional studio bike (MT6 class) Consumer-market indoor bike
Certification EN ISO 20957-1 class S, for professional indoor use Typically certified for non-commercial classes only
Duty cycle Continuous class timetable, several hours per day Intermittent individual use
Braking Magnetic, no wearing part Magnetic or friction pad depending on model
Adjustment Multi-axis, tool-free, fast between riders Usually height only
Frame Heavy-gauge robot-welded steel, high rated user weight Lighter section, lower rated user weight
Parts and service Commercial spares and technical support Retail after-sales channel

Specifying a consumer bike for a class timetable is the single most expensive mistake a club makes in this category: the machine is not warranted for that use, and replacement usually arrives within a couple of seasons.

Frequently asked questions

Is magnetic resistance really better than a friction pad?

For class use, yes. There is no consumable to replace, no braking noise, and the resistance setting means the same thing in month one and month twenty.

Does the MT6 come with a console?

The console is an option, not part of the base machine. We quote it per bike so you can equip the whole fleet or only the bikes that need it.

Does a heavier flywheel make a better bike?

Not on its own. Ride feel comes from the balance of the wheel and the quality of the drivetrain, and quietness comes from the magnetic brake and the belt. Flywheel mass alone is a poor buying criterion.

How many bikes does a studio need?

Four to eight is the usual starting fleet for a dedicated cycling room. We size the room, the spacing and the fleet with you before quoting.

Making the decision

For a club running regular RPM-style classes, the MT6 is the reference answer: magnetic, quiet, adjustable and certified for professional indoor use, without moving into the top of the range.
