Rubber gym tile density: what the figure tells you and what it hides

Density is the easiest figure to read on a rubber tile data sheet, and the easiest one to misread. A sports floor does not only take footfall and jumps. It takes static loads from machines and racks, point loads from narrow feet and castors, impacts from bars and kettlebells, and one invisible failure mode that ends up costing the most: permanent deformation, meaning indentation, crushed edges and joints that open. This guide explains what density does and does not tell you, and how to convert it into a specification you can check on delivery.

Short answer. Below roughly 900 kg per cubic metre, a tile is often the wrong choice for a strength area, not because low density is inherently bad but because it usually signals a compromise that shows up later as indentation under machine feet, moving tiles and open joints. Density is a filter, not a verdict: read it together with thickness, hardness and the surface construction, and convert it into mass per square metre, which is the one figure you can verify yourself with a set of scales.

What density actually influences

Density, strictly bulk density, is mass per unit volume. A higher figure means more useful material, granulate plus binder, in the same volume. A lower figure generally means a more open, more porous mix or a less compacted one. It drives four things.

Mass per square metre, through a simple relation: mass in kg per square metre equals density in kg per cubic metre multiplied by thickness in metres. At 20 mm, 850 kg per cubic metre gives 17 kg per square metre and 1000 kg per cubic metre gives 20 kg per square metre. Three kilograms per square metre sounds small until you apply it to 100 square metres, where it is 300 kg of material present or absent.

Stability under load. Less material means more deformation is possible, so more indentation under machine and rack feet.

Edge and joint integrity. A light tile tends to move more, particularly in a loose lay installation, and its edges are more fragile.

Acoustic behaviour. Mass helps. The mass law in acoustics says that, in theory and over a given frequency range, doubling the mass of a partition can add in the order of 6 dB of insulation. Impact noise is more complex than that and depends on the whole build up, floor, underlay, structure and walls, but it explains why a heavier floor usually behaves better in an occupied building.

What density does not tell you

Two tiles can both read 900 kg per cubic metre and behave very differently, depending on granulometry, the quality and dosage of the polyurethane binder, hardness measured on the Shore A scale, the presence of a top layer or wear coat, the quality of pressing and compaction, and the flatness of the substrate and the installation method. Three common misreadings are worth naming.

Denser is not automatically more shock absorbing. Absorption depends on structure and thickness as well. Fall protection surfacing is deliberately more porous and thicker, because its objective is a critical fall height determined to EN 1177, not stability under a rack.

Below 900 does not mean unusable. It means the tile is optimised for something other than stability under concentrated load.

Choosing 40 mm does not solve the problem on its own. A spongy, poorly compacted 40 mm tile will still indent under machine feet.

Density by zone

Convert density into mass per square metre

This is the check anyone can perform, and it is the fastest way to detect a data sheet that does not match the product delivered.

If a supplier describes a tile as high density but the delivered mass per square metre does not match the arithmetic, ask why before the pallets are opened. Our published high density tiles at 1000 kg per cubic metre are 26.00 EUR per square metre excluding VAT in 20 mm and 32.00 EUR per square metre excluding VAT in 25 mm, and the 40 mm weightlifting tile is 38.50 EUR per square metre excluding VAT.

A method that avoids the usual mistakes

Map the zones first: circulation and cardio, heavy machines, free weights, impact and drop, and any wet area. Then identify the dominant constraint in each, whether that is protecting the substrate, limiting noise, holding racks steady, or meeting a fire reaction requirement in a public building. Only then fix a combination of density, hardness and thickness. Useful starting points: 20 mm at 950 to 1000 kg per cubic metre is a good general professional standard; 25 mm at the same density suits committed free weight training; 40 mm dense tile in a dedicated zone suits drop training.

Finally, check the documents that a professional or public project will need: reaction to fire class under EN 13501-1 with the flooring subscript, slip performance where relevant, and indoor air emissions labelling where national rules require it.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a minimum density for a gym floor?

No standard sets one, which is exactly why the figure gets misused. Set the requirement by zone and verify it by mass per square metre, which is measurable on delivery, rather than by a density claim on a brochure.

Will a dense tile be too hard underfoot?

Not at the thicknesses used in a gym. Comfort is driven far more by thickness and by the surface construction than by bulk density. A 20 mm dense tile is comfortable for circulation and cardio and stable under machines, which is why it is the most common specification we ship.

Does density affect noise transmission to the floor below?

It contributes, through mass, but on its own it will not solve an impact noise problem in an occupied building. Impact noise needs a system: a resilient underlay, the correct tile, and attention to how the floor meets the walls. Treat density as one component of that build up.

Can I use one density across the whole room?

You can, and many small facilities do, in which case specify to the most demanding zone. On anything above roughly 150 square metres, zoning is cheaper: thin under cardio, dense under machines, thick and dense in the drop area.
