The price per square metre of a rubber tile floor is driven mainly by thickness, density, finish and order volume. The quantity is a separate calculation: measure the surface, add a cutting margin of 3 to 7 per cent, then identify the high impact zones, typically the free weight area, where the specification is reinforced. What actually moves the price
Thickness is the first variable, and it follows use rather than budget: a machine zone and a drop zone do not need the same tile. Density comes next, since two tiles of identical thickness can behave very differently under repeated impact. Finish is the third driver, whether the tile is plain black, coloured, wood effect or supplied with a specific surface pattern. Volume is the fourth, because tiles are produced in batches and the unit cost falls as the order grows.
A single figure per square metre is therefore only meaningful once the zoning is settled. Ask for a price on a defined split, so much surface in the machine zone, so much in the free weight zone, so much in circulation, and the quotation becomes comparable between suppliers. Ask for a price on an undefined 200 square metres and you will receive four numbers that cannot be compared.

Working method, step by step
Measure the room and draw it, including every column, plinth, doorway and change of level. Split the drawing into zones by use before thinking about product. Apply the margin from the table above to each zone rather than to the room as a whole, because a narrow corridor with three doorways generates proportionally far more waste than an open hall. Then produce a setting out plan showing where the first full tile is laid, since starting from the wrong edge is the most common reason a floor ends with a line of narrow offcuts along the most visible wall.
Order the whole floor in one go. Tiles are manufactured in batches and slight variations of shade between batches are normal; a top up order placed three weeks later can be visibly different in a room lit from one side. If a top up is unavoidable, keep it for a back of house area rather than the main floor.

What margin should I allow if the tiles are laid diagonally? More than for a straight layout, since every perimeter tile is cut. Take the upper end of the range in the table and confirm it against the setting out plan.
How do I produce a simple setting out plan? Draw the room to scale, mark the obstacles, choose the starting edge so that the cut tiles fall on the least visible side, and count the full tiles first and the cut ones afterwards.
Square tiles or interlocking puzzle tiles? Square tiles are the reference for permanent installations and large surfaces. Interlocking tiles suit smaller rooms and installations that may be moved or extended.
