SBR tiles suit playgrounds, where they provide a surface that cushions falls and protects children from injury, and they are weather resistant, which makes them durable outdoors.

One point governs the specification here and is not optional. Playground equipment is covered by EN 1176-1, while the impact-attenuating surfacing beneath it is covered by EN 1177. The two are separate standards and must not be confused: a tile is specified against EN 1177 for the free fall height of the equipment it sits under, and that height is what determines the thickness you order. Never specify EN 16630, the outdoor adult fitness standard, on a children’s play area.

Gym and fitness flooring

Formats, colours and specification

Sizes

The range covers several sizes and thicknesses. The standard formats are 50 x 50 cm and 100 x 100 cm, which cover most configurations. The 1 m2 format is the usual choice for large continuous areas because it means fewer joints per square metre and a faster installation; the 50 x 50 cm format is easier to handle alone and easier to cut into corners and around fixings.

Colour options

Recycled SBR is generally black or grey. Where a project needs colour, the tile can be produced with a coloured EPDM top layer, which allows a designed, branded or zoned surface rather than a uniform black floor. The coloured range is listed under coloured rubber tiles.

Getting the specification right

Choosing between formats, thicknesses and finishes is where most projects lose time. The three questions that settle it are the load the floor takes, the fall height it has to protect against, and whether the area is indoor or outdoor. Installation and maintenance

Installing recycled SBR tiles

Installation is straightforward and does not require advanced technical skills.

1. Prepare the surface: make sure the substrate is clean, dry and level. Uneven surfaces affect both adhesion and the stability of the tiles.
2. Lay the tiles: for interlocking or puzzle tiles, assemble them by aligning the edges. For a permanent installation, apply a rubber-specific adhesive to the substrate before laying.
3. Cut and finish: tiles can be cut to fit edges and corners exactly. Use a sharp knife or a suitable saw for a clean cut.

Maintenance

• Routine cleaning: sweep or vacuum debris and dirt. Damp cleaning with warm water and a mild detergent is enough to remove marks.
• What to avoid: do not use abrasive or corrosive cleaning products. On outdoor installations, check the drainage regularly to prevent standing water.

Frequently asked questions

Do the tiles have to be glued down?

Not always. Interlocking tiles laid in a fully enclosed area can stay loose. Bonding becomes the right answer as soon as the floor takes lateral load, wheeled traffic or daily dropped weights.

Which thickness for a play area?

It is set by the free fall height of the equipment, verified against EN 1177, not by preference. Send us the equipment and its fall height and we will confirm the thickness.

Can SBR tiles be used outdoors?

Yes, they are weather resistant. The substrate has to drain, and the surrounding build-up should be specified for outdoor use from the outset.

Are recycled tiles as durable as new rubber?
