Ninja structures for leisure centres

The test a structure has to pass in a leisure centre is whether a youth worker with a general qualification, not a sports coach, can supervise it safely on a wet Wednesday with twenty children. That is a stricter requirement than it sounds. It rules out anything needing technique instruction, anything needing a spotter, and anything where the consequence of a mistake depends on the supervisor reacting quickly. Structures that pass it generate their own activity: children work out the sequence themselves, difficulty scales without adult intervention, and a 45 minute session fills itself. This page covers how to choose and document them for out-of-school and after-school settings.

Age banding is the whole design problem

A leisure centre serves a wider age range in one space than almost any other type of facility, often within the same hour. A structure sized for a fourteen year old is dangerous for a six year old, and a structure sized for a six year old is ignored by a fourteen year old. The answer is either banded structures or a single structure with progressive difficulty built in.

Age band Structure Key specification
6 to 12 Ninja initiation modules Short ropes, low traverses, soft obstacles, maximum height 1.8 m, impact-attenuating surface beneath
10 to 18 Parkour course Climbing walls, jump zones, jump bars, develops general motor control and measured risk taking
12 to 18 Street workout for young people Low pull-up bars, dips, push-up stations, strength and balance
All ages Multi-activity zone Balance, climbing, slackline and throwing combined, progressive difficulty levels

An initiation ninja module for 6 to 12 year olds needs a minimum of around 30 m2 of clear space, excluding the safety zones around it. The safety zones are not optional and not negotiable, and they are the reason a structure that looks like it fits a courtyard often does not.

Supervision, inspection and the weekly routine

Structures are designed for supervision by non-specialist youth workers holding a general youth work qualification. No sports coaching competence is required for the initiation modules, and standard supervision ratios apply. What does need to be in place is a routine.

Requirement What is supplied
EN 1176 certification Certificates for all ninja, parkour and youth street workout modules, for safety committee files
Impact-attenuating surface Specified to EN 1177 for the fall height of the structure
Weekly visual checks Check sheet written for youth workers, not for technicians
Annual inspection Recommended inspection plan issued at installation
Procurement file Technical specification responses, unit price schedules and data sheets
Central purchasing Ordering through a central purchasing body is possible on some equipment

The weekly check sheet matters more than it appears. Most incidents on outdoor structures trace back to a fixing or a rope that had been visibly degrading for weeks, and the difference between a centre that catches it and one that does not is whether a simple one-page routine exists and belongs to somebody. We issue it as part of the installation rather than as a document to request later.

Fitting the structure to the session format

After-school activity slots typically run to 45 minutes including changing and moving the group, which leaves roughly half an hour of actual use. That format rewards structures with immediate engagement and no set-up. Parkour courses and multi-activity zones suit it particularly well because the activity is self-organising and needs no elaborate teaching plan, and a non-specialist supervisor can run the group without preparation. Initiation ninja modules also work within the slot, provided the group is small enough to rotate through without queuing, which in practice means one module for around twelve children rather than twenty.

Full-day holiday programmes are a different exercise: there the structure has to hold attention over several hours, which argues for a combination of two structures with different demands rather than one larger course.

Buying as a local authority

Most orders in this segment come from municipalities, groupings of municipalities and their delegated operators, which means a procurement procedure. We supply the technical specification responses, unit price schedules, data sheets and layout drawings the file requires, negotiated rates apply for municipalities and inter-municipal bodies, and urgent files are answered within 24 working hours.

Frequently asked questions

Are the ninja and parkour structures certified to EN 1176?

Yes. All ninja, parkour and youth street workout modules are certified to EN 1176, with certification documents supplied for safety committee files, procurement procedures and annual inspections.

Do we need a specialist coach to supervise?

No. The structures are designed for supervision by non-specialist youth workers. Each installation comes with a weekly check sheet written for supervisors and a recommended annual inspection plan.

Which structures suit short after-school slots?

Parkour courses and multi-activity zones, because the activity is self-organising and needs no teaching plan. Initiation ninja modules also fit a 45 minute slot with a group small enough to rotate without queuing.

How much space does a ninja module need?

Around 30 m2 of clear space for an initiation module for 6 to 12 year olds, excluding the safety zones around the structure, which must be added on top.
