Installing a pickleball court

The cost of a pickleball court is decided by the substrate you already have, not by the court itself. Laid onto sound concrete or asphalt, an interlocking polypropylene surface with integrated line markings, net and posts comes to between 8,000 and 18,000 euros installed for a single court, delivered in around three weeks. Laid onto ground that first needs a base, the groundworks can cost more than the sports surface. The first question to answer, before colours, accessories or court count, is therefore what is under the court today. Participation in France has grown by roughly 180 per cent since 2022, which is why most enquiries now come from operators converting existing surfaces rather than building new ones.

What a complete court includes

Component Specification
Sports surface Interlocking polypropylene tiles, ribbed non-slip finish, integrated drainage, UV resistant, service life around 15 years
Line markings White lines integrated into the polypropylene tiles, or painted in sports-grade paint on an existing surface
Playing area 10 x 20 m for a single court including run-off, non-volley zone of 2.13 m, to ITF and USA Pickleball dimensions
Net and posts Net 6.7 m wide, 91 cm at the posts and 86 cm at centre, galvanised steel posts, removable or fixed
Starter pack Paddles, outdoor balls and storage bags, for operators offering equipment hire

Tile colours are customisable, which matters more than it sounds for clubs with visual identity requirements and for hotels where the court is visible from guest rooms. A colour rendering is supplied with the quotation.

Converting an existing tennis court

This is by far the most common project. A standard tennis court of 23 x 11 m accommodates two full pickleball courts with dedicated markings. The economics are straightforward: one tennis court supports two simultaneous games of four players rather than one game of two or four, which changes the utilisation of the same footprint substantially, and the demographic it attracts, broadly 40 to 70 year olds, is one many clubs are otherwise struggling to reach.

Two routes exist. Laying polypropylene tiles over the existing surface gives a dedicated pickleball surface with integrated lines and a defined 15 year life. Painting pickleball lines onto the existing tennis surface is cheaper and preserves tennis use, but produces a court with two sets of markings that players find visually confusing, and it does nothing for a tennis surface already at the end of its life.

Different operators, different constraints

Operator Typical installation Specific constraint
Tennis clubs One tennis court converted into two pickleball courts Preserving or replacing tennis use, federation funding routes
Municipalities Multi-sport area, sports hall or open ground Procurement documentation, grant applications, public access hours
Four and five star campsites Outdoor or covered court Installation in the closed season, appeal to active guests aged 35 to 65
Residences and co-owned buildings Court on parking or green space Removable tiles for the off season, technical file for the owners meeting

The removable option is what makes a court viable in a residence or a seasonal site. Polypropylene tiles can be lifted and stored out of season, which returns the parking space or lawn to its normal use and removes the objection that usually defeats the proposal at an owners meeting.

Surface behaviour and year-round use

Polypropylene tiles are designed for four-season outdoor service: UV resistant, with integrated drainage and a ribbed surface that stays non-slip when wet, which is the practical difference between a court that can be used ten minutes after a shower and one that cannot. That drainage detail also protects the substrate underneath, because standing water on asphalt or concrete is what shortens its life. Indoors, where a court shares a sports hall floor, the relevant reference for the underlying surface is EN 14904 for indoor sports flooring, and markings are usually painted rather than tiled.

Funding is available in several forms. Tennis federation support may apply to club conversions, and municipalities can draw on rural investment and national sports agency schemes. We supply product data sheets, certifications, layout drawings and itemised quotations in the format the grant or procurement file requires.

Frequently asked questions

What does a turnkey court cost?

Between 8,000 and 18,000 euros installed for a single 10 x 20 m court with drainage polypropylene surface, regulation markings, net and posts. The variation comes from the existing substrate, the colour chosen and the accessories included. A quotation with colour rendering is issued within 24 working hours.

Can the surface be used outdoors all year?

Yes. The tiles are built for four-season outdoor use with UV resistance, integrated drainage and a ribbed non-slip surface when wet, with a service life of around 15 years. They can also be lifted and stored out of season where a site needs the space back.

Can a tennis court be converted?

Yes, and it is the most common project. A standard 23 x 11 m tennis court takes two full pickleball courts with dedicated markings. We handle the polypropylene surface or the markings on the existing surface, and supply nets and posts.

Are the markings regulation?

Yes. Courts follow official ITF and USA Pickleball dimensions, with a 2.13 m non-volley zone, lines integrated into the tiles or painted in sports-grade paint depending on the substrate.
