Equipping a Hyrox venue
The binding constraint on a Hyrox training venue is not budget but the length of clear floor you can give to the sled track. Everything else in the format scales in units of one machine or one accessory set; the turf lane does not. A venue that cannot run a straight 15 m sled push has to redesign its class structure, so lane length is the first measurement to take and the first number to put in a quotation request. Budget for a complete fit-out runs from 25,000 to 60,000 euros depending on lane length and how many athletes work simultaneously.
The eight stations and what each one demands of the building
Hyrox is a fixed sequence of eight stations separated by running segments. Each station has a distinct spatial and structural requirement, and reading them as building constraints rather than as a shopping list is what makes a layout work.
| Station | Competition workload | What the venue must provide |
|---|---|---|
| SkiErg | 1,000 m | Wall or frame anchorage, 2 m clear behind each unit |
| Sled push | 50 m | Low-friction turf lane, flat and level |
| Sled pull | 50 m | Same lane, rope run and clear return path |
| Burpee broad jump | 80 m | Rubber flooring, continuous run |
| Rowing | 1,000 m | Rower footprint plus 1.5 m recovery space |
| Farmers carry | 200 m | Kettlebell sets, carry corridor |
| Sandbag lunges | 100 m | Sandbags 10 to 20 kg, lunge corridor |
| Wall balls | 100 repetitions | Target wall, 6 to 12 kg balls, impact-rated surface |
Lane length dictates class size
Synthetic low-friction turf is supplied in configurations from 15 to 30 m. A 15 m lane is workable but forces a shuttle format, with athletes turning the sled at the halfway mark, which slows a class and creates congestion. A 20 to 25 m lane lets a coach run two sleds in parallel without collision. Above 25 m you gain competition realism but you are spending floor area that could hold cardio stations.
The turf is compatible with standard sleds, including competition-specification units, and works in dry and wet conditions. Underneath and around it, 40 mm rubber tiles handle jump landings, sled loading and dropped weights.
Sizing by simultaneous athletes and indicative budget
A Hyrox venue is sized by how many athletes you can put through the sequence at once. The table below sets out three realistic configurations. Quotations are modular: many operators commission the eight stations first and add cardio units as class attendance builds.
| Configuration | Turf lane | Cardio units | Indicative budget |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compact, 8 to 12 athletes | 15 m | 2 rowers, 1 ski erg, 1 air bike | 25,000 to 35,000 euros |
| Standard, 16 to 20 athletes | 20 to 25 m | 4 rowers, 2 ski ergs, 2 air bikes | 35,000 to 48,000 euros |
| Full venue, 24 athletes and above | 25 to 30 m | 6 rowers, 3 ski ergs, 3 air bikes | 48,000 to 60,000 euros |
Accessory weights follow competition standards: wall balls at 6, 9 and 12 kg, sandbags from 10 to 20 kg, kettlebells in standard formats. These can be bought station by station or as a complete eight-station set.
Operating economics of a Hyrox lane
The turf lane is the highest-value floor in the building because no other equipment can occupy it. That makes utilisation the number to watch. Venues that recover the cost fastest schedule the lane across the whole day rather than reserving it for Hyrox classes: sled work suits general conditioning, small-group personal training and off-season athlete preparation equally well. The equipment set is not exclusive to affiliated venues, and a functional training or HIIT gym with no Hyrox affiliation gets the same use out of turf, sleds, accessories and rubber.
Maintenance is low. Sleds are steel with adjustable handles and no consumable parts. Air rowers and ski ergs have no motors and no electrical supply requirement, which removes the main failure mode of a conditioning fleet and means the lane can sit anywhere in the building without a power run.
Flooring zones and running segments
The eight stations are separated by 1 km of running split into eight segments, which in a training venue is usually reproduced on a shortened indoor loop or on the same rubber that serves the burpee broad jump lane. That loop is not neutral floor: it takes continuous foot traffic at pace all day, so it should be specified as sports flooring rather than as circulation. Where a venue runs the loop outdoors, an outdoor sports surface with a defined drainage detail avoids the winter problem of a lane that stays wet and unusable for weeks.
Inside, plan three flooring zones rather than one. The turf lane carries sled loads and needs a flat, level substrate. The station zone takes 40 mm rubber for dropped kettlebells, sandbags and wall balls. The cardio and running zone takes a thinner rubber, typically 17 mm, which is more comfortable underfoot at speed and cheaper per square metre. Specifying a single thickness across the whole venue either overspends on the running loop or underprotects the slab under the stations.
Frequently asked questions
What budget should I plan for a complete venue?
Between 25,000 and 60,000 euros for turf lane, sleds, rowers, ski ergs, air bikes, functional accessories and rubber flooring. The range is driven by lane length and the number of simultaneous stations.
Is the turf compatible with sleds we already own?
Yes. The low-friction synthetic turf works with standard market sleds, including competition-specification units, in dry and wet use. Lane lengths from 15 to 30 m are available.
Can we use this set-up without an affiliation?
Yes. Turf, sled, accessories and rubber form a general-purpose functional training set that suits cross-training, HIIT and athlete conditioning with or without a formal affiliation.
What are the lead times?
Accessories and stock items ship in 5 to 10 working days. Synthetic turf and heavy equipment run to one or two weeks. We coordinate an installation schedule to limit closure, and issue a layout drawing with the quotation within 24 working hours.
