Equipping a combat sports gym

The economics of a combat sports gym are decided by how many disciplines share the same square metres. A cage, a ring and a grappling area each occupy a fixed footprint whether or not a class is running on them, so the operator who fills all three across the week has a very different business from the one who fills only the evenings. Sizing the room is therefore a timetabling exercise before it is a purchasing exercise. A complete fit-out, cage, tatami, ring, bag supports, strength and conditioning zone and rubber flooring, runs from 23,000 to 56,000 euros delivered and installed.

Indicative budget by zone

The ranges below assume a gym running striking and grappling side by side with roughly 150 m2 of flooring. Quotations are modular: many founders commission the core discipline first and add the second zone once the timetable justifies it.

Zone Included Indicative budget
MMA cage, octagon Structure, netting, assembly 8,000 to 18,000 euros
Grappling tatami 40 mm, 50 to 100 m2 2,000 to 5,000 euros
Professional boxing ring Structure, canvas, corners 4,000 to 10,000 euros
Bag supports, six positions Brackets, bags optional 800 to 2,500 euros
Strength and conditioning zone Cross-training cage plus 2 to 3 selectorised machines 6,000 to 15,000 euros
Rubber flooring, 150 m2 40 mm tiles, laid 3,000 to 6,000 euros
Complete gym Delivered and installed 23,000 to 56,000 euros

One ring, several striking disciplines

A single ring of 6 x 6 m or 7 x 7 m with four ropes and padded corners serves English boxing, Thai boxing, kickboxing, muay thai and savate without modification, and comes with a plywood floor and canvas. This is the most efficient purchase in the building because it multiplies across disciplines rather than sitting idle between them. The same logic applies to the cage, which is supplied as an octagon or a square with nylon netting on a tubular steel frame, and can be assembled by your own team using the supplied instructions or installed by our technicians depending on location.

Grappling surfaces and the hygiene constraint

Tatami is the one surface in a combat gym with a genuine compliance dimension. Ours are certified to EN 12503, the European standard for combat sports mats, at 40 mm thickness and 200 kg per cubic metre density with a non-slip surface, and are supplied as rolls or as tiles depending on the layout. Optional wall covering handles perimeter safety where throws end near a wall.

The choice between rolls and tiles is an operating decision rather than an aesthetic one. Rolls give fewer seams, which matters for hygiene in a discipline where skin contact with the surface is constant and where skin infections spread through a club quickly. Tiles allow a damaged section to be replaced without lifting the whole mat, and allow the grappling area to be reconfigured seasonally. Clubs running a fixed judo or jiu-jitsu timetable usually take rolls; multi-use rooms usually take tiles.

Constraints that shape the building

Item Constraint
Bag supports Ceiling or wall structure must carry dynamic load; free-standing frames where it cannot
Cage and ring Clear circulation around the full perimeter for coaching and spectators
Grappling area Continuous surface, no thresholds, wall covering where throws finish near a wall
Strength and conditioning zone 40 mm rubber, separated acoustically from classes running alongside
Flooring Interlocking 40 mm tiles allow partial replacement in high-wear areas

Bag mounting is the constraint most often discovered late. Wall brackets and ceiling mounts transmit substantial dynamic load into the structure, and in a converted industrial or retail unit the ceiling frequently cannot take it. Free-standing frames solve the problem but consume floor area, so the decision has to be made before the layout is fixed rather than after.

Preparing fighters, not just running classes

A gym with a competitive roster needs a strength and conditioning zone as well as mat and ring time. A multi-purpose cross-training cage, two or three selectorised machines and cardio in the form of an air rower and a treadmill cover most of what a coach programmes, in a footprint of a few square metres. This zone also earns revenue outside class hours, when members train alone, which makes it one of the better returns per square metre in the building.

Frequently asked questions

What does a complete combat sports gym cost?

Between 23,000 and 56,000 euros delivered and installed, covering cage, tatami, ring, bag supports, a strength and conditioning zone and rubber flooring. Modular quotations let you start with the core and extend later.

Are the tatami certified for judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu competition?

Yes. They are certified to EN 12503, at 40 mm thickness and 200 kg per cubic metre density with a non-slip surface, supplied as rolls or tiles, with optional wall covering.

Can our own team assemble the cage?

Yes. Cages are delivered with full assembly instructions and can be built by your team. Installation by our technicians is available depending on location, and should be specified at quotation stage.

Does one ring cover all our striking disciplines?

Yes. A 6 x 6 m or 7 x 7 m ring with four ropes and padded corners serves English boxing, Thai boxing, kickboxing, muay thai and savate, with plywood floor and canvas included.
