  • Equipping a CrossFit box

Equipping a CrossFit box

A box of around 200 m2 running 20 to 40 athletes per class costs roughly 21,000 to 57,000 euros to equip, delivery and installation included. Three variables drive that figure: the linear length of the rig, the number of complete lifting stations you can run at once, and how much of the floor has to survive dropped barbells. Accessories barely move the total. This page covers how to size a box around its operating constraints rather than around a catalogue.

On this page

  • Size the box on simultaneous athletes, not floor area
  • Two floor thicknesses, never one

Size the box on simultaneous athletes, not floor area

Floor area is a poor planning unit. What sets the bill is how many athletes move through a class at the same time, because that number fixes station count. Two boxes of identical surface area, one running classes of 12 and one running classes of 35, need very different inventories.

The ratios below are the ones we work from when drawing a layout. They are capacity ratios, not aspirational targets.

Item Planning ratio Class of 30 athletes
Rig modules of 900 mm 8 to 16 modules, wall mounted or central 12 to 16 modules, 11 to 14 linear metres
Olympic barbells, 20 kg 1 per 3 athletes 10 barbells
Rubber bumper plates 200 kg per lifting station 6 to 10 stations loaded
Air rowers 1 per 8 athletes 4 rowers
Air bikes 1 per 10 athletes 3 bikes
Ski ergometers Complement to rowers and bikes 2 units minimum
Lifting platforms 2.4 x 1.5 m standard 6 to 12 stations

Two floor thicknesses, never one

The most common specification error in a box is ordering a single rubber thickness across the whole surface. A box needs two. Cardio and rig zones take 17 mm tiles, which give enough underfoot comfort for athletes moving at speed and protect machine feet without making the surface spongy. Lifting zones take 40 mm, which absorbs dropped barbells and protects the concrete slab underneath. Getting this wrong is expensive twice over: too thin under the platforms and you crack the slab, too thick under the rig and athletes lose stability.

Interlocking tiles are worth the small premium over rolls in a box because you replace the two or three tiles that wear out under a heavy platform rather than lifting a whole run. Cut to size is available and we can accompany the installation.

The rig is a structural decision, not a purchase

Rig geometry follows the building, not the other way round. Modules of 900 mm let you set pull-up bars, gymnastic rings and climbing rope anchor points along a wall run or around a free-standing central structure. Each attachment point is load tested to 400 kg. Wall-mounted rigs save floor area and suit narrow buildings; central rigs give access from both sides and double the athlete throughput per linear metre, but they need clear headroom on all sides.

Headroom is the constraint that kills more box projects than budget. Allow 3 m clear under any obstruction for a cross-training cage. Below that, overhead squats, wall balls and rope climbs are all compromised, and no amount of clever layout recovers it.

Indicative budget by line item

The ranges below are for a box of 20 to 40 athletes with roughly 150 m2 of rubber. They are starting points for a costed quotation, not fixed prices.

Line item Typical configuration Indicative budget
Modular rig 8 to 16 modules, 8 to 16 m 4,000 to 12,000 euros
Platforms, barbells, plates 6 to 12 complete stations 6,000 to 18,000 euros
Cardio conditioning 4 rowers, 2 bikes, 2 ski ergs 6,000 to 16,000 euros
Workout accessories Kettlebells, wall balls, ropes 2,000 to 5,000 euros
Rubber flooring, 150 m2 17 mm and 40 mm zones 3,000 to 6,000 euros
Complete box Delivery and installation included 21,000 to 57,000 euros

Opening cash flow and phasing

A box in its first year is a business with a filling membership base and a full equipment bill on day one. Two levers help. The first is phasing: commission the rig, the platforms and the flooring in full, then add cardio machines as class sizes grow. Rowers and bikes are the easiest line to stage because they scale one unit at a time without disrupting anything already installed. The second is leasing. Lease-to-own over 36 to 60 months is available on box fit-outs; on 30,000 euros of equipment over 48 months, instalments start in the region of 650 euros per month. We include a leasing simulation with the quotation on request.

Structural warranties run to 20 years on steel structures. Stock items ship in 5 to 10 working days; a full box fit-out from Tours generally lands within 2 to 4 weeks, delivered as a single consolidated drop so you close the box once rather than three times.

Frequently asked questions

What does it cost to equip a 200 m2 box?

Between 21,000 and 57,000 euros for 20 to 40 athletes, covering rig, platforms, barbells and plates, cardio, accessories and 150 m2 of rubber, with delivery and installation included. The spread reflects rig length and how many lifting stations run simultaneously.

Which rig length suits 20 to 40 athletes?

Eight to sixteen modules, so 8 to 16 linear metres, wall mounted or central depending on the building. The configuration is fixed after a survey of your space, and a layout drawing is included with the quotation.

Which cardio machines are genuinely essential?

Air rower, air bike and ski ergometer. For 30 athletes that means at least 4 rowers, 3 bikes and 2 ski ergs. Vertical storage is available where floor area is tight.

Do you deliver and install outside France?

Yes. Delivery is covered in France, Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg, and export is costed project by project. We have delivered installations on three continents.
