Leg curl and leg extension machines: specification guide for gym operators

SRX53 Iso-Lateral Leg Curl - L’Ingénierie de Précision pour une Chaîne Postérieure Parfaite – vue 2

The leg curl is the station most often under specified on a commercial strength floor, and the decision that matters is not seated against prone but how many square metres you are willing to give the posterior chain. Hamstring machines are bought for knee joint stability, for balancing a quadriceps dominant floor and, increasingly, for the rehabilitation and referral work that clubs and public facilities now host. This guide covers the four formats, the iso-lateral question, verified catalogue prices and how to size the zone without wasting floor area.

Why a dedicated hamstring station earns its floor space

Free weight and compound stations load the hamstrings, but they do it as part of a hip pattern. Knee flexion under controlled resistance is not covered by squats, lunges or hinges, and a floor without it produces the imbalance that physiotherapists see constantly: strong quadriceps, comparatively weak hamstrings, a knee that is stabilised unevenly. For an operator, three user groups justify the purchase on their own. Older members and referral users need a guided, seated movement with no balance demand. Members returning from knee injury need controlled, low load knee flexion. Athletic members need the machine for accessory volume that a barbell cannot provide.

The four formats compared

Seated leg curl places the user upright with a thigh pad, working the hamstrings from a lengthened hip position. It is the easiest format for beginners to set up and the most comfortable for larger users. Prone leg curl places the user face down and is the classic bodybuilding format, biased to the short head of biceps femoris, but it is harder for older users to get on and off. Standing single leg curl uses the least space and suits circuit layouts. Iso-lateral machines give each leg an independent arm, which is what makes them valuable clinically and in performance settings: the dominant leg cannot compensate for the weaker one, so asymmetry is exposed rather than hidden.

Format Position Best for Footprint Limitations
Seated leg curl Upright, thigh pad General membership, referral, older users Medium Thigh pad pressure on some users
Prone leg curl Face down Strength and physique focused floors Long and narrow Awkward entry for limited mobility
Iso-lateral leg curl Independent arms Rehabilitation, sports, asymmetry correction Medium Slightly longer set up per user
Dual leg extension and curl Combined station Small floors, hotels, corporate gyms Smallest per exercise Queues when the floor gets busy

Selectorised or plate loaded

Selectorised is the correct default for the hamstring station. Load changes take seconds, increments are small enough for rehabilitation progressions and there are no discs left on the machine at closing time. Plate loaded versions cost less to buy and take unlimited load within the frame rating, which suits performance centres and strength focused clubs, but disc handling in a lying or seated position is genuinely awkward for many users and depresses utilisation on a general membership floor.

Verified catalogue prices

All figures below are our current prices excluding VAT. Note that published French articles have quoted the Bodytone SRX53 iso-lateral leg curl at 1,560 EUR; the correct catalogue price is 2,044 EUR excluding VAT, and that is the figure any quotation will use.

Machine Format Price excluding VAT
Bodytone SRX53 iso-lateral leg curl Plate loaded, iso-lateral 2,044 EUR
Bodytone SR08E plate loaded leg curl Plate loaded 2,815 EUR
Etenon R8502 lying leg curl Selectorised, prone 3,450 EUR
Etenon R8506 seated leg curl Selectorised, seated 3,650 EUR
Etenon R8503 dual leg extension and leg curl Selectorised, combined 4,590 EUR
Bodytone FH55 prone leg curl Selectorised, prone 4,506.30 EUR
Bodytone FH53 seated leg curl Selectorised, seated 4,980.10 EUR

For the paired quadriceps station, the Etenon R8501 leg extension is 3,450 EUR excluding VAT and the Bodytone FH52 leg extension is 4,738 EUR excluding VAT. Buying curl and extension from the same range matters more than it sounds: matching pad heights, stack increments and upholstery colour keeps the zone coherent and keeps your spare parts list short.

Sizing the leg zone

Facility Recommended configuration Approximate area
Hotel or corporate gym One dual leg extension and curl 4 to 5 m2 including access
Independent club up to 300 m2 One seated curl plus one leg extension 8 to 10 m2
Commercial club 500 m2 and above Seated curl, prone curl, leg extension 12 to 15 m2
Rehabilitation or referral facility Iso-lateral curl plus seated curl, small increments 10 to 12 m2
Performance centre Iso-lateral plate loaded curl plus selectorised curl 12 m2

Allow a clear entry side of at least 90 cm on any leg curl, and 120 cm behind a prone machine so users can get on and off without stepping into a circulation lane. On a floor where every square metre is contested, the dual extension and curl station is the honest compromise: one machine, two exercises, and a queue only during the busiest ninety minutes of the day.

Setting up and inducting users

The knee joint axis must line up with the machine’s rotation axis, and the ankle pad should sit just above the heel, not on the achilles tendon. Where the seat back is adjustable, moving it forward shortens the effective hamstring length and reduces range for tall users. Most complaints about knee pain on a leg curl trace back to one of these two settings rather than to the machine itself, which makes a clear pictogram on the frame a cheap investment. Load should be controlled through the eccentric phase; if the stack lands audibly at the end of each repetition, the load is too high for that user.

Standards, warranty and maintenance

Indoor strength machines for commercial use must conform to EN ISO 20957. Under the 2024 revision of part 1, class S covers professional and commercial use, class H covers domestic use, class I designates inclusive equipment and classes A, B and C describe accuracy. Class H machines do not belong on a paying floor. Our strength ranges carry 2 to 5 years of warranty depending on the range, with 20 years on steel structures.

Maintenance is straightforward and worth scheduling. Check cable and pulley condition monthly on selectorised machines, check ankle and thigh pad fixings weekly, and keep pads on the spare parts list rather than ordering them after they split. Roller pads on leg curls wear faster than any other upholstery on the floor because they take direct load through a small contact area.

Frequently asked questions

Seated or prone leg curl if we can only have one?

Seated. It is easier for a wide range of body sizes to set up, it is far easier for older and less mobile members to get on and off, and it produces fewer complaints about lower back position. Prone is the better second machine.

Is an iso-lateral machine worth the premium?

In rehabilitation, sports and performance settings, yes, because independent arms make left to right asymmetry visible and trainable. In a general membership club it is a nice to have; the money is usually better spent on a second bilateral station to cut the queue.

What stack size should we specify?

A stack reaching 90 to 120 kg covers virtually every user on a hamstring curl, and small increments matter more than the ceiling. If your facility does referral or post injury work, ask whether 2.5 kg add on weights are available, since 5 kg jumps are too coarse at the bottom of the range.

Can a dual extension and curl machine serve a full club?

Up to roughly 400 members, yes. Beyond that the single station becomes a bottleneck at peak hour, and the correct move is to split into two dedicated machines rather than to add a second dual unit.

How long should these machines last?

Frames outlast the business plan; steel structures carry 20 years of warranty. The realistic replacement driver is upholstery and cosmetic wear at 10 to 12 years on a busy commercial floor, which is why stocked spare pads and available cables matter more than the initial price difference between two comparable machines.
