How Long Do Rubber Tiles Last?

by Michaël Galy / Thursday, 13 June 2024 / Published in Entretien et maintenance, Guides Acheteurs
Quelle est la durée de vie des dalles caoutchouc

Rubber tiles are steadily more popular as a floor covering across a wide range of applications. Whether the setting is a playground, a gym, an animal facility or a commercial space, rubber tiles bring real advantages. One question comes up more often than any other: how long do they actually last? This article looks at the lifespan of rubber tiles in detail, at the factors that influence their longevity, and at what maintenance does to extend it.

What rubber tiles are

Before discussing lifespan it is worth being clear about the product. Rubber tiles are floor coverings manufactured from recycled rubber or from rubber granulate. They are available in a range of colours, patterns and thicknesses, which is what makes them suitable for so many different applications.

The factors that determine the lifespan of rubber tiles

The service life of rubber tiles varies according to several factors. These are the main ones.

1. Material quality

The quality of the material used to manufacture the tiles plays a decisive role in how long they last. High quality rubber tiles are generally more durable and more resistant to wear. Choosing a superior grade of tile is therefore the first condition for maximum longevity, and it is the one decision that cannot be corrected later.

2. Tile thickness

Thickness also affects service life. Thicker tiles are generally more resistant to wear and can last longer. The thickness should be selected according to the intended application rather than to a budget line: an under-specified thickness in a heavily used area will not be rescued by maintenance.

3. Use and traffic

The use and the traffic the tiles are subjected to also influence their lifespan. Tiles installed in high traffic areas, such as public playgrounds, can wear more quickly than those in low traffic areas. The expected use has to be taken into account when choosing both the material and the thickness.

4. Regular maintenance

Regular maintenance extends the service life of rubber tiles. Clean them regularly to remove dirt, debris and stains. Applying a sealant or a protective coating can additionally help to prevent premature wear.

5. Weather conditions

Weather has an impact too. Tiles exposed to extreme conditions, such as high or low temperatures, excessive humidity or prolonged exposure to sunlight, can deteriorate more quickly. Local climate conditions should be taken into account when selecting and installing the tiles.

Factor Effect on lifespan When it is decided
Material quality Decisive At specification
Thickness Significant At specification
Traffic level Significant At specification
Maintenance Extends service life Throughout the life of the floor
Weather exposure Accelerates deterioration At specification and installation

Choosing the right tile for the application

Three of the five factors above are settled before a single tile is laid, which is why the specification stage matters more than the maintenance regime. An indoor strength area, an outdoor sports surface and a playground are three different briefs, and the same tile does not answer all three. Our rubber gym flooring tiles cover indoor training areas; outdoor sports flooring is specified for weather exposure; and playground use brings in impact attenuation, which is governed by EN 1177 and is checked against the free fall height of the equipment installed above it. The certified options are in our playground surfacing range.

FAQ

How long do rubber tiles last on average?

Average service life varies according to the factors above. In general, high quality rubber tiles that are properly maintained can last 10 to 20 years, and sometimes longer.

Are rubber tiles UV resistant?

Many rubber tiles are designed to resist UV rays. It remains important to check the manufacturer specifications to confirm that the tiles chosen are suitable for prolonged exposure to sunlight.

How should rubber tiles be maintained?

Clean them regularly with water and a mild detergent. Avoid aggressive chemical products, which can damage the material. Applying a sealant or a protective coating can also help to prevent premature wear.

Can damaged rubber tiles be repaired?

Damaged rubber tiles can often be repaired. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified professional for advice on the repair.

Are rubber tiles environmentally friendly?

Rubber tiles manufactured from recycled rubber are considered environmentally friendly. Using recycled rubber tiles contributes to reducing waste and to promoting environmental sustainability.

Are rubber tiles suitable for playgrounds?

Rubber tiles are frequently used as a floor covering in playgrounds. They provide a soft, impact-attenuating surface, which makes them well suited to play areas.

Conclusion

The lifespan of rubber tiles depends on several factors: the quality of the material, the thickness of the tiles, the use and the traffic, regular maintenance and the weather conditions. By choosing high quality tiles, maintaining them correctly and taking the intended use into account, it is possible to extend their service life considerably. Rubber tiles offer real advantages in terms of comfort, safety and durability, which is what makes them such a popular choice across so many different applications.
