Professional gym equipment in Toulouse: supplier for the Occitanie region

by Michaël Galy / Tuesday, 03 March 2026 / Published in Conseils d'aménagement
Équipement fitness professionnel à Toulouse : fournisseur salle de sport Occitan

Toulouse is one of the most sport-driven metropolitan areas in France, and for an operator planning a facility there the practical question is simple: who can supply the whole fit-out, to professional specification, and deliver it to the region. More than 700 municipal sports facilities, an annual municipal investment above 17 million EUR in sports facilities alone, and more than 152,900 students in the Toulouse education authority at the 2024 intake make the local demand for professional gym equipment one of the strongest in the country.

This guide is written for the people who make that decision: independent club owners and franchisees, hotel and serviced-residence managers, municipal sports departments, and training bodies preparing an opening, a refurbishment or an extension in the Toulouse area or the wider Occitanie region.

Toulouse and Occitanie: a leading sports region

A metropolitan area twice named the most sporting city in France

Toulouse was named the most sporting city in France twice by the magazine L’Equipe, in 1998 and 2007. Behind that ranking sits an unusually dense club network and a deliberate municipal policy. Since 2014 the city has built, refurbished or made available more than 700 municipal sports facilities, including more than 200 projects carried out between 2020 and 2025. The 2025 municipal budget allocates 17.2 million EUR to sports facilities, of which 6 million EUR goes to the swimming pool plan alone.

Public investment on that scale translates directly into equipment demand: every new sports hall, every refurbished fitness room and every modernised aquatic centre is a fit-out project that has to be specified properly.

Occitanie, the fourth sporting region in France

At regional level, Occitanie counts 17,000 sports clubs and around 1,300,000 licence holders, which places it fourth nationally behind Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes, Ile-de-France and Nouvelle-Aquitaine. In the fitness segment specifically, the French market now exceeds 5,600 sport and fitness establishments serving 7 million members, with a turnover of 3.2 billion EUR in 2025, up 7 percent year on year. The Toulouse catchment area, with its demographics and its dense business base, captures a significant share of that growth.

An exceptional student and business base

The Toulouse education authority hosted more than 152,900 students at the 2024 intake; the Toulouse urban unit alone accounted for 123,071 students at the 2023 intake, or 46 percent of all students in Occitanie. The University of Toulouse (37,000 students, with a strong science, technology, health and sport profile), INP, TBS Education and ISAE-Supaero together create a priority audience for urban gyms and wellness studios.

On the business side, Toulouse Metropole is organised around 7 major economic hubs and more than 119 business zones covering over 5,000 hectares. The Blagnac aerospace platform, Toulouse Aerospace, Toulouse Euro Sud-Ouest and the logistics parks concentrate tens of thousands of employees, a direct target for corporate gyms and neighbourhood clubs.

Who buys professional equipment in the region

Independent gyms and franchises

The Toulouse area holds a growing number of gyms: full-service clubs, specialist studios (HIIT, yoga, boxing), low-cost franchises and premium spaces. Every opening or refurbishment needs a complete fit-out: cardio zone, strength floor, functional area, sports flooring and, increasingly, a wellness space. Equipment choice drives the member experience, the retention rate and ultimately the profitability of the site.

Local authorities and public bodies

Toulouse Metropole and its 37 member municipalities invest heavily in modernising sports halls, pools and fitness rooms. Blagnac, Colomiers, Tournefeuille, Balma and Ramonville each maintain and renew their own facilities. Municipal social action centres, community centres and inter-municipal sports departments are structural buyers for any professional equipment supplier.

Hotels, residences and healthcare

Business tourism is a major driver in Toulouse, the European capital of aeronautics. Three, four and five-star hotels in the centre and on the periphery, including Blagnac and the airport area, invest in fitness and wellness spaces to differentiate themselves. Student and senior residences, care homes with physiotherapy rooms, and clinics specialising in sports rehabilitation complete the picture.

Higher education and sports training

The University of Toulouse, the regional sports training centre and the local business and engineering schools all run physical activity units or strength and conditioning rooms. These bodies look for durable equipment, compliance with the standards their teaching requires, and a supplier able to service the installation over its full life.

The equipment a professional facility needs

Strength training: selectorised machines and free weights

The strength floor remains the heart of a professional gym. Equipment built for intensive use means selectorised machines (presses, pulldowns, chest press), a complete dumbbell rack, Olympic bars and adjustable benches, multi-stations and cable machines. See the dedicated range on the professional strength training machines page. The selection has to reflect the target audience, the available surface and the expected footfall.

Cardio: the shop window of your club

The cardio zone is usually the first thing a prospect sees. Treadmills, cross-trainers, rowers, indoor cycling bikes, steppers: these machines have to be robust, connected and visually attractive. In a market as competitive as Toulouse, a high-specification cardio zone is a genuine commercial argument. Our professional cardio equipment selection covers the references normally specified for club use.

Sports flooring: the foundation of the investment

Flooring is routinely underestimated at the planning stage. An unsuitable floor increases injury risk, accelerates wear on the machines and ruins the acoustics of the building.

Zone Recommended floor Indicative thickness
Strength floor (free weights) Vulcanised or recycled rubber 15 – 20 mm
Cardio zone Soft rubber or high-density PVC 6 – 10 mm
Group exercise studio Floating sports parquet or flexible PVC 8 – 12 mm
Functional and cross-training area Thick shock-absorbing rubber 20 – 30 mm
Wellness, yoga, stretching High-density foam or cork 10 – 15 mm

The full range is on the professional gym flooring page, zone by zone.

Cross-training rigs and functional areas

Functional training keeps gaining ground in the region. Multi-station rigs, throwing zones and strongman areas are strong attraction arguments, particularly with the 15-35 age group that makes up the majority of members in a student city. These installations require suitable flooring, sufficient ceiling height and structures anchored in line with the applicable safety requirements.

Street workout and outdoor fitness trails

The City of Toulouse has multiplied free-access street workout installations and outdoor fitness trails in its parks and along the Garonne. Municipalities in the metropolitan area and rural inter-municipal bodies across Occitanie look for equipment that withstands the local climate, complies with the applicable European standards and is easy to maintain. Adult outdoor fitness equipment falls under EN 16630; equipment intended for children falls under EN 1176-1, with impact-attenuating surfacing to EN 1177. The two families are not interchangeable in a tender document.

Wellness: the structural trend of the professional market

Sauna, cold plunge, relaxation rooms and infrared cabins: the wellness segment is growing fast in premium clubs, hotels and athletic recovery facilities. Clubs looking to differentiate themselves increasingly build a recovery space into their offer, answering demand from office workers and committed athletes alike.

Choosing a supplier for a project in Occitanie

What actually matters in a professional purchase

A gym fit-out in Toulouse commits significant capital. Buyers should weigh several criteria:

  • Catalogue coverage. A single supplier covering strength, cardio, flooring, functional and wellness avoids managing five separate contracts.
  • Build quality and durability. Professional equipment takes intensive daily use; frame strength and surface resistance are not negotiable.
  • Compliance. Indoor equipment for professional use should be specified to EN ISO 20957-1 class S; outdoor adult stations to EN 16630; children equipment to EN 1176-1 with EN 1177 surfacing. Facilities open to the public in France also fall under the national public-access building rules known as ERP, and all equipment carries CE marking where applicable.
  • Service and maintenance. Parts availability, response time and preventive maintenance contracts matter more than the discount at signature.
  • Logistics. Reliable delivery to the site, whether it sits in the metropolitan area or in a rural municipality.
  • Project support. Zoning advice, layout plans and commissioning assistance.

Indicative budget by type of facility

Type of facility Typical surface Indicative equipment budget
Full independent gym 200 – 400 m2 60,000 – 150,000 EUR
Boutique studio (HIIT, yoga, boxing) 80 – 150 m2 15,000 – 40,000 EUR
Hotel fitness room 30 – 80 m2 10,000 – 35,000 EUR
Refurbished municipal sports hall 300 – 600 m2 50,000 – 200,000 EUR
Professional wellness space 20 – 60 m2 15,000 – 60,000 EUR

These ranges cover equipment only. Civil works, ventilation and electrical installation sit outside them.

Light In Fitness

Light In Fitness is based at 6-8 rue Victor Laloux, 37000 Tours, and supplies professional fitness and sports equipment across France, from the Toulouse metropolitan area to rural municipalities in Occitanie. The catalogue covers strength, cardio, sports flooring, cross-training, street workout, fitness trails and wellness, which allows a facility to be equipped end to end through a single contact.

Specifics of a fit-out in the south of France

Designing for the local climate

Occitanie enjoys exceptional sunshine but also long periods of intense heat. For outdoor installations, UV-resistant materials able to cope with wide temperature swings are essential, and outdoor surfacing has to stay slip-resistant and colour-stable under strong sun. Indoors, some rubber floors tolerate air-conditioning humidity swings better than others.

Urban renewal projects and funding

Toulouse Metropole runs several large urban renewal operations that systematically include sports facilities. Such projects may draw on public funding, including the French national urban renewal agency, European regional development funds and regional sport programmes. The Occitanie Region supports its clubs through a scheme granting 500 to 2,000 EUR towards equipment purchases. A solid technical file – product data sheets, certificates, itemised quotation – is essential to secure that funding.

Responding to public tenders

Local authorities in the region regularly tender for equipment. A supplier answering successfully needs detailed technical sheets, certificates of conformity to the applicable EN standards, verifiable references and the ability to deliver within contractual deadlines. Product traceability and manufacturer warranties are differentiators in the technical evaluation.

Coverage across Occitanie

Whether the project sits in the Toulouse metropolitan area, in Haute-Garonne, Tarn, Tarn-et-Garonne, Ariege, Aude or in the coastal departments of Herault, Gard and Pyrenees-Orientales, delivery is organised from Tours for the whole region. Assembly and commissioning services are available for larger projects.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find a professional gym equipment supplier in Toulouse?

Work with a supplier specialised in the B2B market, able to cover strength, cardio, flooring, functional and wellness in one catalogue, to deliver anywhere in France and to support the project from layout to installation.

What budget should I plan to equip a professional gym in Toulouse?

It depends on surface and positioning. A full 200 to 400 m2 facility runs between 60,000 and 150,000 EUR for equipment. An 80 to 150 m2 boutique studio can be equipped for 15,000 to 40,000 EUR. A 30 to 80 m2 hotel fitness room usually needs 10,000 to 35,000 EUR. These ranges exclude civil works, ventilation and electrical installation.

Can local authorities order professional fitness equipment?

Yes. Municipalities, inter-municipal bodies and public sports establishments can order through public procurement or direct agreements. The equipment supplied complies with the applicable EN standards and comes with the technical certification public buyers require.

Which equipment suits a hotel fitness room best?

Priority goes to compact, quiet cardio machines – treadmill, cross-trainer, rower – a few versatile selectorised strength machines, and a floor that looks good and is easy to clean. Premium properties add a wellness area with sauna, cold plunge and a relaxation zone.

Does the equipment have to meet a particular standard?

Indoor professional equipment is specified to EN ISO 20957-1 class S. Outdoor adult stations follow EN 16630, and children equipment EN 1176-1 with EN 1177 surfacing. Naming the wrong standard is the most common reason a technical bid is set aside.

Planning your project

Equipping a gym, a hotel fitness room or a municipal facility in the Toulouse area is first a specification exercise: the right class of equipment, the right floor under each zone, and a supplier who will still be answering the phone in year eight. Send us your floor plan, your surface areas and the profile of your users, and we will return a zoning proposal and an itemised quotation: request a quote.
