Gym changing room specification: lockers, benches, showers and furniture

by Michaël Galy / Friday, 17 April 2026 / Published in Conseils d'aménagement

Changing rooms absorb 5 to 15 per cent of a gym fit out budget but decide a far larger share of how members judge the whole facility. Members pass through the changing area twice per visit, so it is both the first and the last contact with your brand at every session. A premium cardio and strength floor loses its credibility instantly behind undersized, badly ventilated or poorly secured changing rooms. This specification covers the six sections of a complete changing area, sizing rules by facility type, indicative budgets and the humidity, hygiene and accessibility constraints that decide whether the installation survives ten years of daily use.

Why the changing area is a commercial decision

French sector surveys quoted in our original guide put changing room complaints at 20 to 30 per cent of stated cancellation reasons. Three further effects matter to an operator. Positioning: a premium club with rusting lockers cannot defend a premium price. Asset value: on resale or brand licensing, tired changing rooms typically discount the goodwill by 10 to 20 per cent. Throughput: an undersized changing area creates queues at peak hours and pushes members towards less profitable slots. None of these appear on an equipment quotation, which is exactly why the section gets cut first and regretted later.

Section one: secure lockers

The locker is the core item and the one members touch most. Four technologies dominate, and the choice is an operating decision as much as a purchasing one.

Locker type How it works Indicative budget per locker Best fit
Mechanical key Master keyed cylinder, keys issued at reception 80 to 180 EUR excluding VAT Staffed mid market clubs
Member padlock Hasp only, the member brings the padlock 50 to 120 EUR excluding VAT Functional training boxes, low staffing
Electronic code or RFID badge Four digit code or badge, resettable remotely 150 to 350 EUR excluding VAT Premium clubs, corporate sites, 24/7 access
App connected Booking and opening from the member app 250 to 500 EUR excluding VAT High end clubs and hotel wellness

Materials follow the environment rather than the price list. Powder coated steel is the standard for dry changing rooms. High pressure laminate handles humidity well and gives a better finish for premium positioning. Anodised aluminium is the option for poolside and spa changing rooms, where corrosion resistance governs. Under EU data protection rules, anonymous locker codes carry no personal data, while badge systems tied to member records do and must appear in your processing register.

Sections two to six: benches, showers, front of house, gym floor furniture and signage

Benches should run 3 to 4 linear metres per changing zone, 30 to 40 cm deep, with a 45 cm seat height that suits the widest range of users. Hardwood or sealed laminate on a powder coated steel frame is the durable combination, at an indicative 150 to 400 EUR excluding VAT per linear metre. Showers need individual cubicles with 2 m partitions, thermostatic mixers to remove any scald risk, R11 to R12 slip resistant flooring and forced extraction of 10 to 15 air changes per hour. Ventilation is the single most common omission: without it, mould and odour appear within weeks and no cleaning schedule will fix it.

Front of house covers the reception desk at 1.10 m with a lowered 75 cm section for wheelchair users, access control gates with a widened 90 cm accessible lane, towel provision and waiting furniture. On the training floor itself, plan one water fountain per 80 to 120 m2, wall mounted disinfectant wipe dispensers beside machine clusters, closed bins, mat storage racks and full height mirrors from 2.40 m. Signage is the cheapest section and the most often botched: emergency exits and evacuation plans are a legal requirement in any public access building across Europe, and you also need usage rules, accessibility wayfinding, CCTV notices where cameras exist and a consistent commercial identity.

How many lockers and showers do you actually need

The working rule is one locker per active member plus 20 per cent headroom for peak attendance and new sign ups. Applied by facility type it gives the following envelope.

Facility Target members Lockers Shower cubicles Total changing area
Mid market fitness club 800 to 1,200 200 to 300 8 to 12 60 to 90 m2
Premium fitness club 600 to 900 180 to 260 10 to 16 plus relaxation zone 100 to 160 m2
Functional training box 150 to 250 80 to 150 padlock type 4 to 8 30 to 50 m2
Four star hotel, 60 m2 gym Room guests 20 to 40 2 to 4 15 to 25 m2
Five star hotel with wellness Room guests 60 to 120 premium 8 to 12 plus relaxation 50 to 100 m2
Boutique Pilates studio 150 to 300 40 to 80 compact 2 to 4 15 to 25 m2
Corporate gym 1 per registered employee By headcount 4 to 8 25 to 60 m2
Thermal spa centre Day visitors 50 to 150 aluminium 10 to 20 80 to 150 m2

Unisex individual cabins, each combining locker, bench, mirror and full height partition, are the boutique studio trend. They cost 30 to 50 per cent more per user than open changing rooms and answer a real and growing expectation, so treat them as a positioning choice rather than a cost overrun.

Frequently asked questions

How many lockers per member should we plan?

One locker per active member plus 20 per cent. Clubs that size on average attendance rather than membership run out of lockers at 18:00 on Tuesdays, which is precisely when new members form their opinion.

Which locker material suits a pool or spa changing room?

Anodised aluminium, or high pressure laminate on a corrosion protected frame. Powder coated steel is fine in dry changing rooms but will show corrosion at fixings in a permanently humid atmosphere.

Is mechanical ventilation really mandatory?

Treat it as non negotiable. Plan 10 to 15 air changes per hour of forced extraction in showers and changing rooms. It is far cheaper than replacing mouldy joinery and it removes the odour complaints that drive cancellations.

Can changing room furniture be financed with the equipment?

Yes. Lockers, benches and reception furniture are commonly written into the same leasing or hire purchase agreement as the training equipment, which spreads the cost over the same period.

What lead time should we allow?

Stock items ship in 5 to 10 working days. Bespoke locker banks, laminate colour matching and made to measure reception desks need to be planned earlier in the programme, so raise them at the design stage rather than at fit out.
