Gym Chains Compared: Which Equipment Strategy Fits Which Club Model?

by Michaël Galy / Saturday, 10 January 2026 / Published in Guides Acheteurs
guide des salles de sport et fitness comment choisir la meilleure expérience

Low-cost, mid-range, premium boutique: the fitness market now runs on three quite different business models, and each one lives or dies on a different equipment strategy. If you operate a club, a franchise or a studio, the brand of machine you install is not a detail of fit-out — it is what your members judge you on and what sets your maintenance bill for the next ten years.

Three club models, three sets of constraints

Low-cost chains built their model on volume and on very high machine availability. Their equipment must survive continuous traffic with minimal supervision, so durability and simple, obvious operation matter more than variety.

Mid-range clubs sell breadth: classes, free weights, a full strength floor, extended opening hours. Their constraint is coverage — enough stations that a member never queues, across enough movement patterns that a full programme is possible in one room.

Premium and boutique operators sell an experience and charge accordingly. Here the finish of the equipment, the feel of the movement and the visual coherence of the floor are part of what justifies the membership price.

What the equipment actually has to deliver

  1. Durability under heavy traffic. The cost that hurts a chain is not the purchase price, it is the machine out of service during peak hours.
  2. Sound biomechanics. A movement path that feels natural is what makes a member come back to a station rather than avoid it, in cardio as much as in heavy strength work.
  3. Finish and design. For any club selling above the entry price point, the look of the floor is part of the product.

Light In Fitness distributes several professional brands and manufactures its own steel and stainless steel structures, which is what allows a floor to be assembled to the model rather than to a single catalogue: see professional cardio equipment and strength training machines.

Club type and recommended equipment

Club model Commercial priority Recommended equipment focus
Low-cost Availability and volume Durable cardio and guided strength machines
Mid-range Breadth of offer Free weight areas and versatile platforms
Premium / boutique Experience and finish Premium range, ergonomic design, coherent floor

The floor under the machines

One line item is systematically underestimated in a fit-out budget: the flooring. It determines noise transmission to neighbouring units, protects the slab under free weights, and is the surface members see first when they walk in. Specify it at the same time as the machines, not after: rubber gym flooring tiles.

Frequently asked questions

Does premium equipment pay for itself in a low-cost club?

Not through the price of the machine, but through availability. In a high-traffic site, the relevant calculation is downtime and spare-part supply over ten years, not the difference on the invoice.

Should a franchise standardise its equipment across sites?

Standardising simplifies staff training, spare parts and the member experience across locations. The usual compromise is a standard core line-up plus a variable part sized to each site.

Can a floor be equipped in stages?

Yes, and most projects are. What matters is planning the final layout from the start so that the later stations do not end up in the leftover space.
