A monobloc air conditioner with no outdoor unit cools a gym, a coaching studio or a hotel fitness room without any condenser on the facade or the roof. The whole machine sits indoors and connects to outside air through two core-drilled holes of roughly 160 to 210 mm diameter, closed with discreet grilles matched to the facade. It is the only realistic option when a building’s co-owners refuse an outdoor unit, when the building sits in a protected heritage area, or when there is simply no technical access. The trade-off is that the compressor is in the room with your members, so indoor noise becomes the decisive selection criterion.
Why a gym overheats faster than any other commercial space
A training floor is a permanent heat generator. An adult at rest dissipates around 100 watts; in hard cardio effort or a metabolic workout, that climbs to several hundred watts per person. Add treadmill motors, lighting, screens and solar gain through a shopfront, and a 100 m2 room holding 15 to 20 people accumulates a thermal load that no amount of natural ventilation clears in summer.
The consequences are commercial, not just physical: discomfort, shortened sessions, negative reviews and summer churn. A room that sits durably above 24 to 26 degrees in the effort zone loses members. Air handling is one of the most common design omissions we see, because it is almost always addressed after the machines are bought, when it actually governs how those machines get used.
When an outdoor unit is not an option
A conventional split system remains the reference wherever a condenser can go outside. In practice a significant share of projects hits one of four walls.

How a monobloc unit works
The entire refrigerant circuit (compressor, heat exchangers, fans) sits in a single wall-mounted chassis installed indoors, high or low on the wall. The outside air needed for heat exchange enters and leaves through two core-drilled holes of roughly 160 to 210 mm diameter in an external wall, closed with grilles in the facade colour. There is no refrigerant line run, no outdoor unit and, on most models pre-charged with R290 at the factory, no refrigeration engineer needed for commissioning.
Recent ultra-slim generations project less than 20 cm from the wall, with typical cooling capacities of 2 to 3.5 kW per unit, inverter operation, and on some models a heat pump mode for shoulder-season heating. On a training floor you therefore work in multiple units zoned by area (cardio, strength, group exercise) rather than one central machine. That has a hidden benefit: a single unit failing never takes out cooling for the whole room.
Sizing warning: the room areas manufacturers publish, often 25 to 35 m2 per unit, are calculated for a living room or an office. In a gym, the density of people under effort changes the calculation completely. Unit count must come from a thermal study covering peak attendance, machine heat gain and the required fresh air rate, not from a catalogue figure.

The noise line deserves a qualification. A monobloc removes the nuisance for outside neighbours, but the indoor sound level varies considerably between ranges and fan speeds, because the compressor is in the room. That is a decisive criterion for a hotel space or a Pilates studio, and a secondary one on a busy CrossFit floor. Six questions to ask before ordering
Real cooling capacity and zoning. Work zone by zone and by peak attendance, not by total floor area. Cardio and functional zones carry the highest gain per square metre; a stretching zone carries almost none.
Indoor sound level at each fan speed. Ask for the figure at maximum speed, not the quiet-mode value, because a gym runs the unit hard in July.
Refrigerant and commissioning route. Factory-charged R290 units avoid the need for a refrigeration engineer on site, which shortens the works and removes a subcontractor from the critical path.
Heat pump mode. A reversible unit covers shoulder-season heating in a room that is empty in the early morning, which matters for hotel and corporate spaces with variable occupancy.
Fresh air renewal. Cooling is not ventilation. Carbon dioxide and humidity control still require an air renewal strategy; a monobloc handles temperature, not air quality on its own.

Frequently asked questions
How many units does a 200 m2 gym need?
There is no honest catalogue answer. With cooling capacities of 2 to 3.5 kW per unit, the count depends on peak attendance, the machine mix, glazing, insulation and the fresh air rate. A gym at 20 people under effort carries several kilowatts of human heat gain alone. A thermal study is the only defensible basis, and it is part of the audit stage in our turnkey projects.
Will two 200 mm holes in the facade need permission?
Usually far less than an outdoor unit, but not never. In a shared building the facade is common property and the works still need authorisation; in a protected heritage area the grille colour and position may be specified. The practical point is that a flush grille is negotiable where a condenser is not.
Is a portable unit acceptable as an interim solution?
For a few days, yes. As a season-long answer for a training floor, no. The exhaust duct through a part-open window lets hot outside air back in, so the machine fights itself, and the compressor noise is in the room at full volume.
Does cooling reduce equipment wear?
Indirectly. Heat and humidity are hard on electronics, belts and upholstery, and a treadmill motor in a hot room works harder. The larger effect is on member retention, but a controlled environment does help the fleet reach the service life you paid for.
