Squat or leg extension? Bench press or fly? The argument between compound and isolation exercises is one of the oldest in strength training, and it matters well beyond the individual training plan: it decides how many racks, benches and single-station machines a gym floor actually needs. The good news is that the research has largely settled it, and the answer is not one or the other but both, combined intelligently.
The two families of exercise
Compound exercises move several joints at once and recruit a large number of muscle groups together. These basic movements form the core of any serious strength programme: squat, deadlift, bench press, overhead press, pull-up, barbell row.
Isolation exercises move a single joint and target one specific muscle. They allow precise, controlled work: biceps curl, leg extension, leg curl, cable triceps extension, chest fly.
As Tumminello and Vigotsky (2018) set out in their review, the two types should not be treated as opposites but as complements within a balanced programme.

What the research says about hypertrophy
The meta-analysis by Rosa et al. (2022) reviewed the studies comparing single-joint and multi-joint work. The verdict: at equivalent volume and effort, both types produce similar hypertrophy in the muscles targeted.
Gentil et al. (2015) reported the same result in beginners: after ten weeks, gains in biceps size were comparable between a group doing pull-ups (compound) and a group doing curls (isolation).
The determining factor is not the type of exercise but the total volume of work, progressive overload and proximity to muscular failure.
Schoenfeld and Grgic (2017) put the working range at 10 to 20 sets per muscle group per week, with progressive overload and adequate recovery, as enough for effective muscle gain whatever the exercise type used.
Where compound exercises win
Time efficiency. A single set of squats works the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes and trunk together. For a member with 45 minutes, that is decisive.
Functional strength. These movements improve inter-muscular coordination and the ability to handle heavy loads, producing strength that transfers to sport and to daily life.
High energy expenditure. Recruiting large amounts of muscle burns more energy, which is useful in a cutting or body-recomposition phase.
Nervous system stimulus. Heavy movements such as the squat and the deadlift place more demand on the nervous system, driving long-term neuromuscular adaptation.
Where isolation exercises win
Targeting weak points. A muscle that does not respond to compound work can be trained directly. The lateral deltoids, for instance, often respond better to lateral raises than to overhead pressing alone.
Less joint stress. Tumminello and Vigotsky (2018) point out that isolation lets someone keep training around an injury or a limitation. A leg extension loads the spine far less than a heavy squat.
Controlled range of motion. Machines and cable stations guide the movement, which allows full-range work with constant tension on the target muscle.
Extra volume without excessive fatigue. After heavy compound work, isolation adds volume to a muscle without overloading the central nervous system.
Practical considerations
Technique and learning. Compound lifts demand more technical mastery: back position, knee alignment, bar path. A beginner has to invest time to learn the squat or the deadlift properly, whereas isolation exercises are generally usable from the first sessions. On a supervised floor that difference translates directly into coaching time.
Fatigue and recovery. Compound movements generate more systemic fatigue. A programme built on squat, deadlift and bench press needs careful recovery management, typically 48 to 72 hours between two sessions targeting the same muscle groups.

How to combine them
The most effective strategy structures the session in two phases.
1. Build the base with compound work. Place these exercises at the start of the session, while the user is fresh. They are the core of strength and mass development.
2. Refine with isolation. Finish with targeted exercises for the muscles that need extra work: arms, shoulders, calves, abdominals.

Does the choice change nutritional needs?
The basic requirements stay the same whatever the exercise type. What counts is total training volume, intensity and the individual goal. A few nuances are still worth knowing.
The fundamentals do not change
Squat or leg extension, the body needs the same inputs to build muscle: enough protein (1.6 to 2.2 g per kg of bodyweight), a moderate calorie surplus during a mass phase, and adequate recovery. Muscle protein synthesis is triggered by mechanical tension and muscle damage, not by the category of exercise.

After a heavy compound session the body has used a lot of glycogen and taken significant systemic stress, so a post-training meal rich in protein and carbohydrate helps recovery. After an isolation or finishing session the energy demand is lower; protein intake still matters, but the timing is less urgent.
What really changes nutritional needs is the total volume of the session and the level of fatigue, not the compound-or-isolation choice. A full-body session with 20 compound sets asks for more fuel than 10 sets of curls and extensions.
What this means for your gym floor
A room that supports both families needs both kinds of hardware. Compound work needs squat racks and power racks with a proper lifting area and weight benches; isolation work needs selectorised machines and cable stations, which also carry the beginners and the members training around an injury.
Indoor equipment for a professional site should be built and certified to EN ISO 20957-1 class S, the class intended for supervised commercial use. Class I is the professional class covering inclusive, accessible use, not a grade above class S.

Do isolation exercises build less muscle?
No. At equivalent volume and effort, hypertrophy in the targeted muscle is similar. The difference lies in time efficiency and in how much of the body one exercise covers.
