How to Choose Outdoor Fitness Equipment

by Michaël Galy / Saturday, 14 September 2024 / Published in Guides Acheteurs
Comment choisir ses agrès sportifs extérieurs

Specifying outdoor fitness equipment is a different exercise from buying indoor machines. The equipment is unsupervised, permanently exposed to weather and vandalism, used by whoever walks past, and installed under a different set of standards. Whether you are a local authority, a campsite, a hotel, a housing provider, a school or a club, these are the decisions that determine whether the installation is still being used and still safe in ten years.

1. Start with the site, not the catalogue

The site sets the constraints before any equipment is chosen. Assess the available area and its shape, the ground beneath it, drainage and how the area behaves after heavy rain, existing surfacing, sun and shade through the day, sightlines from surrounding buildings and paths, and access for both users and installation plant.

Ground conditions matter more than most buyers expect. Foundation requirements differ substantially between equipment ranges, and a site with poor drainage or shallow services will narrow your options before you have looked at a single station.

2. Define who will actually use it

Equipment selection follows the user profile, not the other way round. An installation for a general adult public along a walking route needs a different mix from a training area behind a sports club, a campsite offering a holiday amenity, or a residential scheme serving a mixed-age population.

  • Adult general public. Bodyweight and hydraulic or bodyweight-resistance stations, arranged so that several people can use the area at once without waiting.
  • Trained or club users. Calisthenics and street workout structures, pull-up and dip stations, and heavier resistance equipment.
  • Mixed-age and family sites. A combination of adult stations and separate children’s equipment, physically and visually distinguished from each other.
  • Accessibility. Where the brief is inclusive access, stations designed for wheelchair users need to be planned into the layout from the start, with the circulation and surfacing to reach them.

Our outdoor gym equipment and outdoor fitness trail ranges are organised around these use profiles rather than around product families.

3. Get the standards right

This is where specifications most often go wrong, and it is the one area where an error carries real liability.

  • Permanently installed outdoor fitness equipment for adults falls under EN 16630. That is the reference to ask for on any adult outdoor station.
  • Children’s play equipment falls under EN 1176-1, and the impact-attenuating surfacing beneath it under EN 1177. These are two separate standards covering two separate things, and neither one substitutes for the other.
  • EN 16630 does not apply to children’s equipment, and children’s equipment must never be specified or signed as adult outdoor fitness equipment. Where a site serves both, the two zones are specified separately, to their own standards. Our kids outdoor fitness range is designed for exactly that separation.

Ask every supplier for the declaration and the test documentation, not a statement in a brochure. Then keep it: it is what an inspection will ask for.

4. Materials and how they age outdoors

Outdoor equipment is judged on how it looks and works after several winters. The main choices are galvanised and powder-coated steel, which suits most inland installations, and stainless steel, which is the answer for coastal sites, pool surrounds and anywhere chloride or salt spray is present.

Beyond the base material, examine the surface preparation and coating system, whether fixings are concealed and tamper-resistant, how bearings and moving parts are sealed against water and grit, and whether wear parts can be replaced individually rather than requiring a whole station. Ask directly which parts are available as spares and for how long.

5. Surfacing, layout and the things around the equipment

The surface under and around the equipment is part of the installation, not an afterthought. It governs safe use, accessibility, drainage and how much maintenance the site generates. Specify it alongside the equipment, and check that the free space around each station is respected in the layout rather than compressed to fit more stations in.

The surroundings decide whether an installation is used at all. Lighting, sightlines, proximity to a path or a route people already walk, seating, shade, signage explaining each exercise, and a water point are what turn equipment into a used facility. An installation placed where nobody passes will not be used regardless of what it cost.

6. Maintenance and inspection from day one

Outdoor equipment requires routine visual checks, periodic operational inspection and an annual main inspection, and the operator carries that responsibility for the life of the installation. Budget for it at purchase, agree who carries it out, and keep the records. Specifying equipment whose spare parts remain available is what keeps that cost predictable.

Frequently asked questions

Which standard applies to outdoor fitness equipment?

Permanently installed outdoor fitness equipment for adults falls under EN 16630. Children’s play equipment is covered by EN 1176-1, with its impact-attenuating surfacing under EN 1177. The standards are not interchangeable.

Can adults and children use the same outdoor equipment?

No. Adult outdoor fitness equipment and children’s play equipment are designed and certified to different standards, for different body sizes and different risks. A site serving both specifies two separate zones.

Galvanised steel or stainless steel outdoors?

Galvanised and powder-coated steel suits most inland sites. Stainless steel is specified for coastal locations, pool surrounds and any environment with salt or chloride exposure, where it substantially outlasts coated steel.

What maintenance does an outdoor installation need?

Routine visual checks, periodic operational inspection and an annual main inspection, carried out and recorded by the operator. Agree the regime and the spare-parts availability before you buy, not afterwards.

Specifying your outdoor installation

The right specification depends on your site, your users, your ground conditions and your maintenance capacity. Send us the site plan and a description of who will use it and we will come back with a layout, an equipment specification and a costed proposal: request a quote.
