Material quality and frame construction are the first filter. In a commercial setting, machines are loaded and unloaded hundreds of times a day by people of very different sizes, and the parts that fail first are rarely the ones on the brochure: bearings, cable terminations, guide rods, upholstery seams and welds at the load path. Specify equipment declared to EN ISO 20957-1 class S, the class intended for supervised professional use, and ask the manufacturer what the guarantee actually covers, part by part. Adjustment and safety features
Machines have to be adjustable enough to fit the range of bodies that will use them, and adjustable quickly enough that members actually bother. Check the seat and pad adjustment increments, whether adjustments can be made while seated, the presence of start-position assistance on selectorised stations, and the safety catches and spotter arms on free-weight equipment. Weight-stack shrouds, clear load markings and instruction plates are part of the safety case, not decoration. Selectorised machines suit a mixed membership with limited supervision; plate-loaded machines and racks and cages suit a stronger, better coached population.
Space and layout
Assess the space you actually have, then choose equipment that uses it well. Every machine needs its own footprint plus a working envelope for the moving parts, an entry and exit path for the user, and a service clearance so a technician can reach the stack and the pulleys. Group machines by movement pattern rather than by brand, keep circulation routes clear of loading zones, and place the noisiest equipment away from the studio wall and the reception desk.
Getting the installation right
Preparing the space
Before anything is unpacked, confirm the floor. Strength equipment concentrates load on small feet, and free-weight zones take repeated impact, so the surface has to be flat, sound and protective; see the options in rubber gym flooring. Set out the zones on the floor with tape and walk them before delivery: this is when a layout problem costs nothing to fix. Check the delivery route too, from the vehicle to the room, including door widths and lift dimensions.
Assembly and securing
Follow the manufacturer’s assembly instructions or use a professional installation team. Tighten fixings to the specified sequence, level every machine so the load path is vertical, and anchor anything the manufacturer says must be anchored, in particular tall racks, cages and any station a user can pull against. Keep the assembly documentation; it is what an inspector or an insurer will ask for.
Commissioning and adjustment
Once assembled, test each machine through its full range under load. Look for stack rattle, cable slack, pivot play, uneven guide travel and anything that catches at the end of the movement. Adjust before the room opens, not after a member reports it.
Servicing and maintenance
A written maintenance schedule extends equipment life more than any purchase decision. Clean upholstery daily with a product the manufacturer approves, lubricate guide rods and moving parts on the recommended interval, and inspect cables, terminations, fixings and welds regularly for wear or damage. Record each inspection. Cables and upholstery are consumables; plan for their replacement rather than discovering it.

Does professional equipment have to be anchored to the floor?
It depends on the product. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for each model. Tall racks, cages and stations that can be pulled against are the usual cases where anchoring is required, and skipping it is one of the most common installation faults.
Which machines should a new gym buy first?
Start from the movements your programme needs to cover rather than from a machine list: a push, a pull, a hinge, a squat pattern and a core station, plus benches for free-weight work. Depth in one movement matters less than covering all of them.
