Which Leg Press Offers the Best Value for Heavy Use?

by Michaël Galy / Friday, 28 November 2025 / Published in Guides Acheteurs, Machines guidées
Presse à jambes uni-bi-latérale professionnelle PL1018 — machine musculation jambes acier renforcé, capacité 480 kg, multifonction squat et leg press, idéale pour salle de sport ou centre fitness

Under heavy commercial use, value on a leg press is decided by frame construction, carriage bearings and parts availability – not by the feature list. The leg press is one of the most heavily loaded stations on any floor: it takes the largest weights in the room, it runs continuously at peak hours, and a failure takes out the anchor of the lower-body zone. In the Light In Fitness catalogue, commercial leg presses run from 1,535.00 EUR excluding VAT to 7,513.90 EUR excluding VAT.

What the leg press actually trains

The movement loads quadriceps, glutes and hamstrings, with the calves involved on machines that also offer a calf-raise position. Foot placement shifts the emphasis: higher on the platform brings in more glute and hamstring, lower emphasises the quadriceps. It does not train the back – the back is supported throughout, and any claim that a leg press strengthens the back muscles should be treated with caution.

Its real advantage on a commercial floor is that it lets a member load the legs heavily with the spine supported and without a spotter, which is why it serves everyone from a first-week member to an athlete and why it is standard in rehabilitation settings.

The three designs

45 degree incline

The commercial standard. The sled travels on rails at 45 degrees, which gives a long loaded range and takes the heaviest plate loading. It is also the largest footprint of the three.

Horizontal or seated

A smaller footprint and a lower entry position, which makes it the more accessible option for older members and for rehabilitation work. Selectorised versions keep circuit times short.

Vertical

The smallest footprint, with the load travelling straight up. It is the option for floors where space is the binding constraint, though the entry position suits fewer members than the other two.

Where the value actually sits

  • Frame and welds. Under 400 kg of plates, frame gauge and weld quality are the whole product. This is where a cheap machine reveals itself, and it is not something you can retrofit.
  • Carriage bearings. The sled runs thousands of cycles a week. Sealed bearings on hardened rails are the difference between a machine that still runs smoothly in year five and one that judders in year two.
  • Safety catches. Multiple positive stop positions, reachable by the member from under load without assistance. On an unsupervised floor this is not optional.
  • Adjustment. A backrest with several positions and a platform large enough for varied foot placement. Fixed-position machines fit fewer members and get used less.
  • Parts availability. Ask for the parts list and its lead time before ordering. A machine out of service for six weeks waiting on a bearing costs far more than the price gap between two models.
  • Build standard. For indoor commercial use, specify equipment built to EN ISO 20957-1 class S.

Choosing for your floor

For a general commercial gym, a plate-loaded 45 degree machine gives the most training capability per euro and takes the heaviest loading, and dual-function models that add a hack squat or calf raise cover two stations in one footprint. For hotel, corporate and rehabilitation settings, a selectorised horizontal machine is worth the higher price: pin loading keeps sessions moving and removes the plate handling that unsupervised members do badly. Where floor space is the constraint rather than the budget, the vertical design solves a problem the other two cannot.

Frequently asked questions

Which leg press offers the best value for heavy use?

For most commercial floors, a plate-loaded 45 degree machine – the Gold Line 45 degree at 1,615.00 EUR excluding VAT is the entry point, and dual-function models such as the Bodytone SG59 at 2,940.00 EUR excluding VAT cover two movements in one footprint. Judge the value on frame, bearings and parts chain rather than on the price alone.

Plate-loaded or selectorised?

Plate-loaded takes heavier loading and costs less per station; selectorised keeps circuit times short and suits mixed or unsupervised memberships. The choice follows the members, not the budget.

Does the leg press replace the squat?

No. It loads the legs with the spine supported, which is a different training stimulus and a different risk profile. A complete lower-body zone carries both.

Browse the plate-loaded machines and the vertical leg press range, or request a quote for a complete lower-body zone.
