Sports supplements: how to compare quality, traceability and anti-doping certification

The only supplement quality claims worth anything are the ones a third party has tested and published. Brand statements about purity are marketing; a batch-level certificate under a recognised anti-doping testing programme is evidence. For anyone competing under anti-doping rules — and for any club, coach or facility that recommends products to them — the decisive checks are a certified batch number, an ingredient list with dosages per serving rather than per proprietary blend, and a manufacturing site that can be identified. This guide sets out how to read a label, which certification schemes actually mean something, and what a facility should and should not do.

Why contamination is the real risk, not efficacy

Most supplements do roughly what the evidence says: some help a little, most do nothing measurable, and a handful are genuinely useful. The material risk is different. Sports supplements have repeatedly been found to contain substances not on the label — stimulants, prohormones, undeclared steroid traces — introduced through shared manufacturing lines, contaminated raw materials or deliberate adulteration. Under anti-doping rules, strict liability applies: the athlete is responsible for what is in their body, regardless of how it got there.

That is why the question is not “does this product work?” but “can this specific batch be traced and has it been tested?”

The certification schemes that carry weight

Scheme or reference What it covers What to check
EN 17444:2020 European standard on the prevention of doping substances in sports nutrition products, covering the manufacturer’s risk-management system Whether the manufacturer states compliance and can evidence it
Informed Sport Batch-by-batch testing for substances on the prohibited list Search the actual batch number on the programme’s public database
NSF Certified for Sport Product and facility certification with prohibited-substance screening Product listed by name on the certifier’s register
Cologne List Products analysed for anabolic and stimulant contamination Listing is product-specific, not brand-wide
National anti-doping certification programmes Country-level schemes with equivalent batch testing Recognition by the relevant national anti-doping organisation
GMP / HACCP / ISO 22000 Manufacturing hygiene and food safety management Useful, but they do not test for prohibited substances

The critical distinction: a brand being certified is not the same as the tub in your hand being certified. Certification under these schemes is batch-level. If the batch number on the container is not searchable in the scheme’s database, the claim on the front of the label is decorative.

Reading a label in ninety seconds

  1. Dose per serving, per ingredient. If active ingredients are hidden inside a “proprietary blend”, you cannot tell whether the effective dose is present. Walk away.
  2. Serving size versus realistic use. Many labels quote a dose that requires three or four scoops. Recalculate everything against the amount a person will actually take.
  3. Batch number and expiry. Both must be printed, legible and traceable.
  4. Manufacturer and country of manufacture. “Distributed by” is not “manufactured by”. A named manufacturing site is a traceability asset.
  5. Regulatory status of every ingredient. In the EU and UK, novel ingredients require authorisation before sale, and permitted health claims are restricted to an approved register. An unauthorised health claim on the packaging is a signal about the whole operation.
  6. Certification mark plus searchable batch. The mark alone proves nothing. The database entry does.

Domestic or imported: what traceability actually depends on

Country of manufacture is a weaker signal than buyers assume. What matters is the chain:

  • Raw material origin. Most protein and amino acid raw materials trade internationally regardless of where the tub is filled. Ask where the raw material is sourced and whether it is tested on receipt.
  • Line segregation. Contamination usually happens on shared equipment. Ask whether prohibited-substance-containing products are made on the same lines.
  • Batch retention. A serious manufacturer retains samples of every batch for the shelf life plus a margin, so a positive test can be investigated retrospectively.
  • Recall procedure. Ask whether one exists and has ever been used. A manufacturer that has never recalled anything either has excellent control or poor detection.

A well-controlled imported product is safer than a poorly controlled domestic one. Judge the system, not the flag.

Where to buy, and why the channel matters

Channel Traceability Main risk
Manufacturer’s own site Highest — direct chain of custody No independent view of the range
Specialist retailer Good if the retailer holds supplier documentation Range breadth can outrun quality control
Pharmacy Good, with professional advice on interactions Narrow sports-specific range
General marketplace platforms Lowest — mixed sellers, grey imports, counterfeits No reliable chain of custody; avoid for anyone tested

Recreational athlete or tested competitor: the same standard?

The requirements diverge, and it is honest to say so.

  • Tested competitors — certified batches only, no exceptions, and a written log of every product, batch and date taken. Strict liability makes the log the athlete’s only defence.
  • Serious recreational trainees — certification is prudent but not obligatory. Prioritise dose transparency and manufacturer identification.
  • General fitness members — the honest answer is that whole food, adequate protein intake, sleep and consistent training deliver almost everything supplements are sold to deliver. Anyone with a medical condition or on medication should speak to a pharmacist or doctor first.

What a club or facility should do

Recommending supplements creates a duty of care and, for tested athletes, real liability exposure. Five rules keep an operator on the right side of it:

  1. Stock or recommend only batch-certified products where any member competes under anti-doping rules.
  2. Never let coaching staff give individual nutrition prescriptions unless they hold the relevant qualification and insurance.
  3. Keep supplier documentation on file: certificates of analysis, certification listings, product specifications.
  4. Display the certification database link, not just the logo, so members can verify a batch themselves.
  5. Refer medical questions out. “Speak to your pharmacist” is the correct answer more often than staff think.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if a supplement is safe for a tested athlete?

Check the batch number on the certification programme’s public database, not the logo on the tub. Certification under schemes such as Informed Sport, NSF Certified for Sport or the Cologne List is issued batch by batch. If the batch cannot be found, treat the product as uncertified.

Which European standard covers doping prevention in sports nutrition?

EN 17444:2020 sets out requirements for preventing prohibited substances in sports nutrition products, covering the manufacturer’s risk-management and control system. It complements, rather than replaces, batch-level testing programmes.

Are domestically manufactured supplements safer than imported ones?

Not automatically. What determines contamination risk is raw material sourcing and testing, line segregation from prohibited-substance products, batch sample retention and recall capability. A well-controlled imported product is safer than a poorly controlled domestic one.

What does a proprietary blend on a label mean?

It means the manufacturer has disclosed the total weight of a group of ingredients but not the amount of each. You cannot verify whether any active ingredient is present at an effective dose. For a professional buyer, it is a reason to reject the product.

Should a gym sell supplements at all?

Only with a documented policy: certified batches where members compete under anti-doping rules, supplier documentation on file, no individual prescription by unqualified staff, and medical questions referred to a pharmacist or doctor. The retail margin does not cover the liability of getting this wrong.

Fitting out a facility? Supplements are a retail decision; the training environment is a capital one. Light In Fitness has equipped more than 2,500 customers across Europe since 2013 with cardio, strength, functional equipment and technical flooring. Send us your floor plan and we will return a costed layout with prices excluding VAT within 24 working hours. See also our guide to building a strength floor.
