Playgrounds for shopping centres and restaurants

A play area installed in a shopping centre, a retail park or a restaurant falls under EN 1176 and EN 1177 exactly as a municipal playground does, with one requirement that does not arise outdoors: the reaction to fire of the materials installed, required by the fire safety rules applying to public buildings. The fact that the area is privately owned and free to use changes neither those obligations nor the operator’s liability.

Light In Fitness manufactures and supplies play structures and impact attenuating surfaces for indoor and outdoor use, including versions meeting the reaction to fire requirements that apply in public buildings. This page covers the commercial case: what governs the layout, what governs compliance, and what the operator has to maintain.

Why a play area in a retail environment

The function is not decorative. A play area lengthens family dwell time, creates an identifiable meeting point in a mall, and gives a reason to return outside a purchase occasion. It is therefore treated as an operating asset, with a capital budget, a maintenance budget and an expected service life.

Location Setting Dominant constraint Suitable format
Shopping centre mall Indoor public building Reaction to fire, sight lines from units, circulation Low structure, controlled footprint, continuous impact surface
Retail park, outdoor forecourt Open air Weather, anchoring, out-of-hours vandalism Anchored outdoor structure, free draining impact surface
Restaurant with a children’s area Indoor public building Small footprint, supervision from the dining room Compact module, low free height of fall
Integrated leisure zone, service area Depends on operation Flows, cleaning, resistance to intensive use Rope structure or play tower, technical surfacing

Free height of fall governs the whole project

This is the parameter to settle first, before aesthetics and before budget. It determines the impact area to be treated, the thickness of the attenuating surface under EN 1177, and therefore the total footprint of the area. A module chosen for its looks and installed over an under-specified surface makes the installation non compliant, whatever certificate the structure itself carries.

Indoors, ceiling height and floor loading often restrict the choice to low modules. The playground equipment range covers low configurations as well as rope towers and pyramids, the latter being better suited to the open volume of a mall or a forecourt.

Reaction to fire: the point that blocks a handover

In a building open to the public, installed materials have to evidence their fire behaviour. It is the most frequent reason for a fit-out being refused at handover, and it concerns the floor covering first, since its surface area is the largest.

Fire rated rubber tiles meet that requirement while providing impact attenuation. The range and its applications are detailed on the fire rated rubber tiles page. Other surfacing families, their thicknesses and installation methods are presented on the sports flooring page.

Beyond the playground: formats that bring teenagers in

A conventional playground only holds under-tens. Three formats extend the audience without changing the operating model.

Format Users Location Range
Ninja course Children and teenagers Indoors where height allows, or outdoors Ninja rigs and modules
Parkour modules Teenagers Outdoors, forecourt or landscaped margin Parkour equipment
Modular multi-sport court All users Outdoors, retail park or business zone Multi-sport courts

These formats fall under distinct references: EN 1176 for play equipment intended for children, EN 15312 for free access multi-sport equipment. The boundary is explained on the standards and compliance page.

What the site operator carries after handover

The centre manager or the restaurant operator is the operator of the area. They compile the area file, arrange periodic inspections, record interventions in a register and display the required information, including admitted age ranges. Those duties remain even where the area is covered by CCTV and closed outside opening hours.

Expected file contents and inspection frequency are detailed on the operator duties and inspection records and inspection of playgrounds and outdoor fitness pages.

Frequently asked questions

Is a private play area subject to the same standards as a municipal one ?

Yes. EN 1176 for equipment and EN 1177 for surfacing apply as soon as the area is accessible to the public, whoever owns it and whether access is free or tied to a purchase. Signage and inspection duties fall on the operator of the site.

What is the difference between an indoor and an outdoor area ?

Indoors adds the reaction to fire requirement applying to materials installed in buildings open to the public, and ceiling height limits module height. Outdoors, anchoring, weather resistance and drainage of the impact surface govern the design.

How much floor area should be allowed in a mall ?

The area required follows from the free height of fall of the chosen module, which sets the extent of the impact zone to be surfaced. A low module sharply reduces the total footprint, which is why low structures are preferred indoors.

Can the same impact surface be used indoors and outdoors ?

Not always. The attenuation function is identical, but installation in a building open to the public requires the fire behaviour of the covering to be evidenced. A specific range of rubber tiles meets both requirements.

Can a structure be manufactured in the brand’s colours ?

Yes. Structures and surfaces can be made to measure, with dimensions, configuration and colours defined from the site plan. The process is described on the custom manufacturing page.
