Industrial steel is an iron and carbon alloy to which further elements are added, among them manganese, silicon and copper, to improve its mechanical properties and its fatigue resistance. In sports equipment and construction alike, two grades stand out: S275 and S355, structural steels specified under the European standard EN 10025-2.
The designations are not arbitrary:
- S stands for structural steel.
- The number, 275 or 355, is the minimum yield strength in megapascals, in other words the maximum stress the steel can carry before it deforms permanently.

S275 offers an excellent compromise between strength and flexibility, which makes it well suited to compact structures and modular equipment. S355 is used for heavy construction, professional CrossFit cages, outdoor structures and any equipment subjected to extreme stress.

Surface treatment and corrosion protection
Raw steel is extremely strong but will corrode if it is left unprotected, so Light In Fitness applies protective treatment as standard.
- Thermoset epoxy powder coating, for resistance to perspiration, humidity and scratching.
- Hot-dip galvanising on outdoor structures, creating a protective zinc layer against corrosion.
- Shot-blasted or powder finishes for appearance and for a non-slip texture where hands and feet make contact.
These industrial finishes deliver a service life of more than ten years, including in demanding conditions: humid climates, intensive use, exposure to salt or to chlorine.

Frequently asked questions
Is S355 always the better choice?
Not automatically. S355 is specified where dynamic loads and heavy use demand it. On lighter, modular assemblies, S275 delivers the required strength at a better weight-to-strength ratio, and over-specifying adds mass without adding safety.
Does the steel grade replace the need for corrosion protection?
No. Grade governs mechanical behaviour, not corrosion resistance. Outdoor structures need the coating system as well as the grade, which is why hot-dip galvanising is used on them.
What documentation should a buyer ask for?
Conformity certificates for the steel batches, mechanical test results, and the EN 1090-1 documentation for the fabricated structure. Public tenders increasingly require all three.
