A rehabilitation room is not a small gym. The people using it start from an injury, a surgery or a loss of function, they are supervised throughout, and the same machine is used by a dozen different patients in a day. That changes the specification completely: what matters is not maximum load but the ability to start from nothing, to be adjusted by a clinician rather than by the patient, and to be cleaned between users.

Why the medical setting has its own requirements
Physiotherapists and osteopaths use strength and cardio equipment as a treatment tool, not as a fitness amenity. The machine has to support the patient through a movement they cannot yet control on their own, which is precisely what a supervised, guided machine does and what free-form exercise does not.
Three properties define equipment suitable for the setting. It must be safe, because the user population includes people with reduced balance, reduced strength and pain-limited range. It must be versatile, because a single room has to cover a wide spread of conditions. And it must be comfortable, because a patient who dreads the session does not complete the programme. Indoor equipment installed in any such facility must be certified to EN ISO 20957-1 class S, the professional classification.
What distinguishes rehabilitation equipment from gym equipment
Equipment intended for healthcare settings is defined by three features that a standard commercial machine does not need. Resistance starts at zero, so a patient can be loaded from the very beginning of the movement rather than from an unusable minimum. Access is lateral, so a patient with limited mobility, or a wheelchair user, can be placed on the machine without climbing over a frame. And the adjustments are operated by the clinician, not by the patient, so the setting is correct before the patient takes any load.
Add to that the practical constraints of multi-patient use: surfaces that tolerate repeated disinfection, upholstery that does not absorb, and low maintenance so the practitioner spends time on care rather than on servicing. These are the properties that separate a rehabilitation machine from a gym machine at the same price point.
Selection criteria
Safety comes first, to avoid any risk of secondary injury. Versatility comes next, so the same room can treat several types of condition and load different muscle groups. Comfort motivates patients to complete the programme. Smoothness of movement matters more here than anywhere else, because a jerky machine transmits load exactly when the joint is least able to absorb it. Finally, equipment should be simple to operate and low in maintenance, so that practitioners can concentrate on patient care.

The list below is indicative and is adjusted to each project. For general reconditioning, a multi-station with several training positions combined with one cardio machine lets patients work every aspect of their physical condition while rebuilding endurance.
For lower limb rehabilitation, the leg press and the hack squat allow the leg muscles to be loaded safely along a guided path. For shoulder rehabilitation, a shoulder press machine and a butterfly station restore mobility and strength in that region. For the arms, a cable station allows targeted and progressive work with fine control of the load.
Hand and finger rehabilitation is covered with accessories such as a hand grip, a wrist roller and multiple pulling handles, which rebuild the strength needed for everyday tasks. For balance work, a cross trainer and balance discs develop coordination and stability, both central to recovery. Frequently asked questions
Can standard gym machines be used in a rehabilitation room?

Do we need cardio equipment as well as strength machines?
