Professional strength equipment is not one product family but three, and confusing them is the most common reason an equipment list fails to match the facility it was written for. Selectorised machines with a weight stack, plate-loaded machines, and free-weight stations each answer a different need in terms of adjustment speed, load feel and transfer to sport. Cardio machines sit alongside them and complete the offer without belonging to it.
All of it is specified the same way when it goes into a facility open to third parties: indoor equipment for professional use is built to EN ISO 20957-1 class S. What changes between the categories is not the standard but the job.
Free-weight stations
Weight benches
Benches are the base of any free-weight area. They support pressing with barbells and dumbbells, supported rowing, seated shoulder work and arm work, and they are used simultaneously with racks and dumbbell sets rather than instead of them. Adjustable models cover decline, flat and inclined positions on a single frame, which is what makes them the highest-utilisation item in the room.
Specify them on the reliability of the backrest lock, the density of the upholstery, and the stability of the base under an off-centre load. Benches are cheap to buy and expensive to replace early.
Squat racks and power racks
Racks provide a secure structure for squatting, pressing overhead and benching under load. Adjustable J-cups and safety arms let the same frame serve a 1.60 m member and a 1.95 m athlete, and the safety arms are what make heavy work possible without a spotter on an unsupervised floor.
For a commercial site the questions are the anchoring method, the pull-up bar height against the ceiling, and whether the rack accepts the storage and attachments you will want in two years. Our squat racks and power racks are designed for continuous commercial use.
Selectorised machines
Press machines
Chest press, shoulder press and leg press machines load a defined movement with a controlled resistance and a fixed path. The load is changed by moving a pin, which takes seconds. That single feature is why selectorised machines dominate circuits and peak-hour floors: they turn over faster than anything else.
They also lower the entry barrier. A member who has never trained can be shown a press machine in two minutes and use it safely on the same visit, which is not true of a barbell.
Cable and pulley machines
Pulley machines offer the widest exercise catalogue of any single frame, covering pulling, pressing, rotation and the shoulder work that rehabilitation programmes depend on. The movement is smooth and continuously resisted through the full range, which is exactly what a physiotherapist or a return-to-sport coach needs.
The whole selectorised line, including press and cable machines, is on our selectorised machines page.
Plate-loaded machines
Plate-loaded machines sit between the two families above. They guide the movement like a selectorised machine but are loaded with discs like a barbell, which gives a load feel closer to free weights and a heavier top end. They are typically simpler mechanically, with fewer cables to inspect, which makes them attractive where maintenance capacity is limited.
The trade-off is time. Loading and unloading plates is slower than moving a pin, and it requires plate storage next to every machine. On a floor with high peak-hour turnover that cost is real. On a strength-focused floor, an academy or a forces gym, it is irrelevant. See the full plate-loaded machines range.
Cardio machines alongside the strength floor
Cross trainers
Cross trainers provide low-impact cardiovascular work and recruit the upper body through the moving handles, which makes them a useful complement for members who cannot run. They condition; they do not replace resistance training, and they should be specified as cardio rather than counted in the strength budget.
Treadmills
Professional treadmills carry programme libraries and cushioning systems designed to reduce joint loading over long daily running hours. On a strength floor they serve warm-up, conditioning and rehabilitation walking protocols. The specification points that matter commercially are motor duty rating, belt and deck life, and the cost of a deck replacement.
Combining the three categories
| Category | Main strength | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Free weights and racks | Transfer to sport, unlimited progression | Strength clubs, boxes, academies, forces |
| Selectorised machines | Fastest adjustment, safest for beginners | Commercial gyms, hotels, corporate and municipal facilities |
| Plate-loaded machines | Free-weight load feel with a guided path, low maintenance | Strength-focused floors, performance centres |
A complete floor carries all three. The ratio between them is dictated by the population, not by fashion: a club serving a general membership leans selectorised, a performance environment leans free weights and plate-loaded, and almost every site underestimates how many benches it needs.
Frequently asked questions
Selectorised or plate-loaded for a commercial gym?
Selectorised, if peak-hour turnover is your constraint. Plate-loaded, if your members train heavy and your maintenance capacity is limited. Many floors carry both, with plate-loaded machines grouped in a dedicated strength zone.
Can free weights be installed in an unsupervised room?
Racks with safety arms and fixed dumbbells can, provided the flooring, anchoring and circulation space are specified for it. Platforms and heavy barbell work generally need supervision or restricted access hours.
What standard applies to indoor professional strength equipment?
EN ISO 20957-1 class S. Ask for the classification to appear on the quotation, whatever the category of machine.
Building your equipment list
Choose the categories from the population you serve and the supervision you can provide, then set the quantities from your peak simultaneous users. Light In Fitness has equipped more than 500 facilities since 2013, and our steel structures carry a warranty of up to 20 years, with a lifetime warranty on stainless steel.
