Description
Certified impact-absorbing surfacing at 295 EUR per cubic metre excluding VAT: these 5/30 mm playground wood chips comply with NF EN 1177 and cover critical fall heights up to 3 metres with the correct installed depth.
A compliant, ecological safety surface
Wood chips remain one of the most economical and natural impact-absorbing solutions for public playgrounds. This product is calibrated at 5 to 30 mm from dry softwood, thermally treated during production, and made from recycled pallets in a fully sustainable short-circuit process — over 92 percent organic matter, conductivity of 0.20 mS/cm and water retention of 110 ml/l.
Depth according to fall height
The required layer depth follows the free fall height of the play equipment, as determined by NF EN 1177 impact attenuation testing:
- Critical fall height 3 m: 27 cm + 10 cm settlement allowance
- Critical fall height 1.5 m: 15 cm + 10 cm settlement allowance
The 5/30 mm grading both cushions impacts and drains rainwater naturally, with no standing water. The layer compacts with use: plan periodic top-ups to maintain the effective depth measured at installation.

Installing a wood chip surface correctly
A compliant installation follows four steps: excavate or contain the area to the required depth, lay a geotextile membrane to separate chips from the soil, spread the chips to the specified thickness including the settlement allowance, and mark the finished level so top-ups can restore it later. Edging — timber or rubber — keeps the layer inside the safety area. We supply volumes matched to your plan, in loose loads for large sites or big bags where access is tight.

Frequently asked questions
Are wood chips compliant for a public playground?
Yes. The chips comply with NF EN 1177, the standard governing impact-absorbing playground surfacing; a 27 cm layer plus 10 cm allowance covers a 3 m critical fall height.
How much volume does my playground need?
Volume = surface area x required depth for your highest fall height, plus the settlement allowance. Send us your dimensions and equipment list; we calculate the volume and quote delivery — every order is preceded by a quote to determine transport costs.
What maintenance is required?
Regular raking to redistribute the layer, plus periodic top-ups as the chips compact. Typical service life is around 6 years. To compare with rubber tiles and other solutions, see our rubber flooring tiles and outdoor sports flooring ranges.
