Description
A disc roundabout is a flat platform set almost at ground level and turned on a sealed bearing. Children sit, kneel, lie on their backs or stand and push, and because there is nothing to climb the item works from the moment a three-year-old can reach the deck. At 1.56 by 1.56 m the platform takes a group, and a free height of fall of just 0.2 m makes it one of the easiest rotating items to integrate into an existing play area.
A rotating item without the height
- Deck in anti-slip chequer plate steel: grip in the wet, no surface coating to wear through under shoes, and no soft component to be cut or burned.
- Free height of fall of 0.2 m, so the item can often be added to a play area without upgrading the surrounding surfacing.
- Foundation depth of only 0.3 m in B30 concrete, which limits excavation on constrained urban sites.
- Sealed maintenance-free rotation bearing: no greasing schedule and no adjustment between annual inspections.
- Open, flat deck that a child can be lifted onto, which makes it usable by children who cannot climb into a seated roundabout.
Materials and finish
The structure is hot-dip galvanised steel finished in structured acrylic paint, over a B30 concrete foundation. Galvanising before painting is the detail that matters on a rotating item: the deck edge takes constant scuffing from feet and shoes, and where the paint is worn through the zinc layer beneath still protects the steel.
Siting and safety area
The minimum impact area is a circle of 5.56 m diameter, measured from the centre of rotation. Nothing may sit inside that circle: no bench, bin, kerb or planting. The free height of fall is 0.2 m. Other formats are shown in our playground roundabouts range.

Frequently asked questions
Does a 0.2 m fall height mean no special surfacing is needed?
For fall height, the requirement is minimal. But the impact area of a rotating item must be free of obstacles and level, and the surface should not allow a child to be dragged; a bound or synthetic surface is preferred where use is heavy.
Can the rotation be slowed or limited?
Speed is set by the children and by the bearing, which is specified for controlled rotation. Where a site wants a gentler item, the rocket or duo roundabouts in the same range turn more slowly by geometry.
Is a chequer plate deck too hot in summer?
Steel decks warm in direct sun, as do all hard surfaces. Where a play area has no shade at all we usually recommend the HDPE-decked version instead, or a planting scheme that shades the item by mid-afternoon.
