The construction is the argument. The rope is braided and bonded rather than braided alone, the guide rings top and bottom are 0H18N9 austenitic stainless steel, and the rope-to-column fixings are protected with chloroprene rubber paint over cast and stainless components.
Specification detail that decides the service life
- Bonded braid: the outer strands are fixed to each other, so a cut or an abrasion does not unravel along the rope. On a rotating net, where the rope works against its fixings on every turn, this is the difference between a repair and a replacement.
- Galvanised steel strands inside the rope resist cutting and hold the mesh geometry under load.
- Upper and lower guide rings in 0H18N9 stainless steel tube, 42.4 mm diameter — the two points that see the most movement, and therefore the two worth specifying in stainless.
- Central column in hot-dip galvanised steel of 219.1 mm diameter: the frame is galvanised steel, not stainless, and the stainless is placed where it earns its cost.
- Chloroprene rubber paint on the cast fixings, chosen for flexibility and weather resistance rather than appearance.

It is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless grade, used here for the tubular guide rings because they are in constant contact with the moving rope assembly and are the components least accessible for recoating.
