Flooring for physiotherapy clinics and rehabilitation centres

The floor of a physiotherapy treatment area does not face the same constraints as a weights room: loads are moderate, but street shoes are worn all day, cleaning is daily and the atmosphere of the clinic matters as much as the technical performance. That is exactly the brief high-density rubber tiles with a fine-grain or smooth finish were designed for: they cushion every step, resist indentation from soles and castors, and come in light shades — oak wood effect, sand, grey, terracotta — well away from the black of a gym floor.

Light In Fitness already supplies physiotherapists with Pilates equipment and rehabilitation cardio machines. This page covers the foundation of any treatment area: the rubber floor tile, with real list prices ex VAT.

How a clinic floor differs from a gym floor

Clinic constraint Consequence for the choice Suitable solution
Street shoes worn all day Fine-grain or smooth surface, high density to avoid marking 15 to 20 mm high-density tile (1,000 kg/m³)
Moderate loads (dumbbells ≤ 20 kg, rehab machines) No need for weightlifting thicknesses 15 or 20 mm over most of the area
Elderly or post-operative patients, balance disorders Non-slip, even surface with no thresholds 100 × 100 cm tiles laid edge to edge, ramped edges at the perimeter
Clinic image, light, calming atmosphere Move away from black: wood, sand, grey or coloured shades Wood-effect tiles, coloured tiles
Daily cleaning and disinfection Non-porous, washable surface without hollow joints Smooth or fine-grain finish, tight edge-to-edge laying
Clinic on an upper floor Impact noise to control for the neighbours Acoustic underlay beneath the tiles

Three possible looks, with list prices ex VAT

1. The clinic look: oak wood-effect tiles

The most requested option among physiotherapists and health-and-fitness practices: the parquet look keeps a care-setting atmosphere, while the 20 mm rubber provides the cushioning and quietness a real wooden floor cannot. The 20 mm light oak tile and the dark oak version are €49 ex VAT/m², the grey wood-effect version €42 ex VAT/m².

2. Light and coloured shades: sand, grey, terracotta, green

To mark out zones or brighten a windowless room, the coloured rubber tiles cover the range: sand, grey, terracotta red or green in 50 × 50 cm / 30 mm at €14 ex VAT per tile, and in 100 × 100 cm format the 15 mm tiles in grey, blue, red or green at €23 ex VAT/m².

3. The strengthening zone: high-density technical tile

If the treatment area includes a rack, selectorised machines or a more intensive strengthening zone, a few square metres of 20 mm 1,000 kg/m³ tile at €26 ex VAT/m² or 20 mm smooth-finish tile at €30 ex VAT/m² can be laid without any change of floor level.

Indoor air quality and fire safety in a healthcare setting

A clinic receives the public, so the fire classification of the floor covering matters. The range includes Cfl-s1 rated tiles such as the 20 mm Cfl-s1 tile at €42 ex VAT/m², and up to Bfl-s1 with the 20 mm Bfl-s1 tile at €45 ex VAT/m². For practices particularly attentive to indoor air quality, the 7 mm interlocking tiles rated A+ for VOC emissions (€65 ex VAT/m²) carry the best indoor-emission rating in the range.

Acoustics: working on an upper floor without disturbing the neighbours

Many clinics operate on upper floors or share walls with other practices. Rubber tiles already absorb impact noise; adding a 10 mm acoustic underlay (€18 ex VAT for a 2 m² sheet) beneath the covering markedly improves insulation against footfall and equipment noise.

What to budget for a treatment area

Configuration Indicative area Solution Indicative supply budget ex VAT
Single practice, one exercise room 20 to 30 m² 15 mm coloured or 20 mm wood-effect tile €500 to €1,500
Full treatment area 40 to 60 m² 20 mm oak tile + technical zone €1,800 to €3,000
Rehabilitation centre, health-and-fitness facility 80 to 150 m² Colour zoning + acoustic underlay On quotation, volume discount

Frequently asked questions

What tile thickness for a physiotherapy treatment area?

15 to 20 mm covers everyday clinic use: walking, floor exercises, rehabilitation machines and small loads up to 20 kg. Greater thicknesses (25 to 42 mm) are only justified in a strengthening zone with heavier free weights.

Are there colours other than black?

Yes. The range includes light oak, dark oak and grey wood-effect tiles, plus sand, grey, terracotta, green and blue shades. It is one of the most frequent requests from physiotherapists, who want a clinic atmosphere rather than a weights-room look.

Can the tiles be laid over existing tiling or parquet?

Yes: loose laying edge to edge goes directly over any flat, clean, dry surface, with no adhesive or building work. The clinic remains reversible — the tiles lift without a trace at the end of the lease.

Is rubber compatible with daily disinfection?

Yes. The non-porous fine-grain or smooth surface is cleaned with a mop or scrubber-dryer and a neutral detergent, and withstands the routine disinfection protocols of a healthcare practice. Aggressive solvent-based products should be avoided, as on any resilient floor.

How can noise be limited for the neighbours of an upstairs clinic?

Combining a 20 mm rubber tile with a 10 mm acoustic underlay effectively treats the impact noise transmitted to the concrete slab. For an older building with a light floor structure, contact us with the room configuration and we adapt the build-up.
