How to Choose Sports Flooring for Your Facility

Comment choisir son revêtement de sol de sport

Choosing a sports floor is a delicate exercise that has to weigh several criteria at once. Whether the project is a multi-purpose sports hall, a gym, a school gymnasium or a dance studio, the flooring has to answer durability, safety, comfort and cleaning requirements at the same time, and usually within a fixed budget. This guide sets out the six criteria that decide the specification.

On this page

  • 1. Intended use of the floor
  • 2. Ease of installation and cleaning
  • 3. Thickness and acoustic insulation
  • 4. Ease of maintenance
  • 5. Materials and environmental profile
  • 6. Finishing details

1. Intended use of the floor

The first criterion is what the floor will actually carry. The sport practised on it drives the choice of covering directly.

  • For high impact activities such as basketball, volleyball or intensive fitness work, choose resilient, shock absorbing surfaces such as rubber or vinyl.
  • PVC coverings, particularly those with a reinforced wear layer, give excellent durability against impact and abrasion.
  • For a free weight or lifting zone, thickness and density matter more than appearance: this is where dropped loads decide the life of the floor. The rubber gym flooring tiles range is specified for exactly that duty.

2. Ease of installation and cleaning

PVC and rubber tiles are often recommended for how easily they go down and how easily they are kept clean.

  • They can be loose laid or bonded, and come in a range of colours and finishes, including wood and tile effects, which makes it possible to create a pleasant environment while staying entirely functional.
  • For wet rooms such as changing areas, a non-slip PVC floor is the right answer to prevent falls.
  • Where a large continuous area is needed with fewer joints, rubber flooring rolls cover more ground per linear metre and leave fewer edges to lift.

3. Thickness and acoustic insulation

Thickness plays a decisive role, in particular for acoustics.

  • A thicker floor absorbs impact better and reduces noise nuisance, which is the usual complaint in buildings with occupied space below or beside the training room.
  • Rubber floors are known for their thickness, offering excellent shock absorption while being highly resistant to wear and to point loading from machine feet and racks.
  • On upper floors, or above offices and apartments, adding an acoustic underlay under the finished surface is usually more effective than simply increasing the thickness of the top layer.

4. Ease of maintenance

To keep cleaning simple, favour smooth surfaces such as linoleum or vinyl.

  • These materials are easy to clean, and some ranges carry anti-stain or anti-scratch treatments, which makes them more practical still in busy sports facilities.
  • Match the surface to the cleaning method your team actually uses. A floor that needs a specific machine or a specific product will not be maintained correctly once the opening routine takes over.

5. Materials and environmental profile

If you are looking for materials with a better environmental profile, coverings such as cork, and synthetic coverings based on polyvinyl chloride, are durable and can be recycled through the appropriate channels.

  • Good quality laminate floors with wood effect finishes add warmth to a room while remaining attractive and hard wearing.
  • Ask the supplier for the recycled content and the end of life route in writing rather than relying on a general claim, and check what the local waste stream in your country actually accepts.

6. Finishing details

Do not forget the joints and the skirting, which have to be integrated carefully to give a clean finish and to prevent dirt building up at the perimeter.

  • PVC skirting and expansion joints contribute directly to the life of the covering.
  • Thresholds between zones, and the transition to changing rooms or to a court surface, are where a floor first fails. Specify them at the same time as the field of the floor, not afterwards.
  • For a multi-sport court, roll formats designed for court lines and markings give a cleaner result than tiles: see the sports court rolls.

Frequently asked questions

Tiles or rolls? Tiles are easier to handle, easier to replace one at a time, and can be laid by your own team. Rolls give fewer joints and a more continuous appearance over a large area.

Which floor for a free weight zone? A thick, dense rubber surface designed for dropped loads, laid over a flat base. Standard fitness tiles will not survive a lifting platform area.

What about a dance studio? Comfort and consistent grip matter more than impact absorption from dropped weights. The surface needs to allow controlled sliding without ever becoming slippery.

Does the subfloor matter? It decides the result. Every covering follows the base underneath it: an uneven or damp subfloor shows through and shortens the life of whatever is laid on top.

Getting the specification right

Choosing a sports floor means combining appearance, function and ease of maintenance. Assess your needs carefully against the activities actually practised in the room and against the technical characteristics of the coverings available. That choice will shape not only user comfort but the durability and the look of the space over time. Request a quote with your surface area and your activity mix and we will specify the floor with you.
