Rubber Flooring for Indoor and Outdoor Use: The Professional Specification Guide

by Michaël Galy / Wednesday, 15 January 2025 / Published in Programmes et méthodes d'entraînement
numéro 1 des sols en caoutchouc pour intérieur et extérieur

Rubber is the workhorse of modern sports and leisure surfacing. It is hard-wearing, versatile and good-looking, which is why it has become the default answer for training halls, playgrounds, outdoor courts and an increasing number of interior projects. This article sets out what a professional buyer should actually check before specifying a rubber floor, and what Light In Fitness supplies against each of those checks.

The answers below are deliberately technical. Rubber surfacing is bought on standards, thickness and application – not on appearance – and the wrong specification shows up within a season.

Why rubber is the right material for a sports floor

Rubber flooring is not simply convenient; it combines several properties that no single alternative material offers at the same price point:

  • Durability – built for intensive use, indoors and outdoors alike.
  • Shock absorption – protects joints and reduces injury risk under load.
  • Easy maintenance – routine cleaning is enough to restore the finish.
  • Resistance – slip-resistant, weatherproof and UV-stable.
  • Appearance – available in a wide range of colours and textures.

Worth knowing

Rubber floors are most visible in sports settings, but they suit nurseries, hospitals and leisure areas just as well thanks to their sound-insulating and hygienic properties.

Standards and certifications: what to verify

Light In Fitness rubber flooring is manufactured against the relevant European standards and management-system certifications covering safety, durability and environmental compliance.

Principal references

  • EN 1177 – impact-attenuating playground surfacing
    • Defines how the shock-absorbing performance of a playground surface is determined and declared.
    • It is the European reference standard used to demonstrate the critical fall height of a surfacing product; the equipment itself is covered separately by EN 1176-1.
  • ISO 14001 – environmental management
    • Certifies that production is organised within an audited environmental management system.
    • Covers the use of recycled feedstock and the reduction of the carbon footprint.
  • ISO 9001 – manufacturing quality
    • Guarantees controlled production processes and consistent batch quality.

Regulatory compliance

Standard / certification Description
REACH Compliance with EU legislation on chemical substances.
EN 13501-1 – reaction to fire Classification of construction products by their reaction-to-fire performance.
EN 71-3 – chemical safety Limits the migration of certain elements, which matters for surfaces used in children’s areas.

Always ask for the reaction-to-fire class of the exact reference you are buying, in full, including the smoke index. A class quoted without its index is not a usable specification.

The Light In Fitness range

Our rubber surfacing is built for commercial duty cycles rather than occasional use. The core technical envelope is set out below.

Technical characteristics

Characteristic Detail
Material 100% recyclable rubber
Thicknesses From 10 mm to 50 mm
Formats Tiles, rolls and bespoke
Thermal resistance -30 C to +80 C
Certifications EN 1177 (playground surfacing), ISO 14001 (environment)
Finishes Wide choice of colours and patterns

The format decides the installation method as much as the thickness does. Rubber gym flooring tiles suit weight rooms, free-weight zones and areas that may later be reconfigured, while rubber flooring rolls give a near-seamless surface over large continuous areas. For children’s play areas the specification moves to playground surfacing, where the critical fall height of the equipment governs the choice.

What you get with Light In Fitness

  • Straightforward installation – the products are designed to go down quickly, without complex fixing systems.
  • Full adaptability – suitable for fitness halls, outdoor courts and interior spaces.
  • Bespoke solutions – custom designs where the project calls for them.

Environmental commitment

Our rubber floors are 100% recyclable and manufactured under environmentally controlled conditions, which makes them a defensible choice in a public tender as well as a private fit-out.

Where rubber surfacing is used

  • Gyms and training halls – impact absorption under heavy loads.
  • Playgrounds – fall protection for children, specified against the critical fall height.
  • Terraces and balconies – clean appearance and weather resistance.
  • Garages and technical areas – resistance to oils and greases.

Maintenance in practice

  • Clean with a damp mop and a non-abrasive product.
  • Avoid aggressive chemicals, which dull the rubber surface over time.

Why Light In Fitness is the right partner

  • Proven expertise – equipping professional sports facilities since 2013.
  • Responsive support – project-specific advice rather than a catalogue reference.
  • Certified products – documented standards and declarations supplied with the order.

Frequently asked questions

Is rubber flooring suitable for outdoor use?

Yes. Our surfacing is resistant to UV, frost and wear, which is why the same material families are used on outdoor courts and fitness areas.

Can the colour and design be customised?

Yes, a wide range of custom options is available on colours, patterns and formats.

How long does a rubber floor last?

With proper maintenance our floors can last up to 20 years.

Are the products environmentally sound?

Yes, they are 100% recyclable and produced within a certified environmental management system.

Which thickness should be specified?

It depends on the load and the application: heavier free-weight zones and fall-protection areas need more thickness than a general training floor. The thickness is confirmed against your actual use case at quotation stage.

Specify your floor with us

Rubber surfacing for indoor and outdoor use is a durable, safe and good-looking answer for sports and leisure projects – provided the standard, the thickness and the format are matched to the real use of the area. Light In Fitness supplies the full range with the supporting documentation.
