Almost every rubber floor ends with a cut. Perimeter rows, door thresholds, column bases, drain surrounds: no room divides exactly into whole tiles, and the quality of those cuts is what a client sees first when they walk in. Cutting rubber tiles is straightforward, but the method has to match the thickness and the tool has to match the material. Here is how professional fitters approach it.
Start with the thickness
The single decision that governs everything else is thickness. Up to about 20 mm, a long-blade utility knife is the right tool: it is faster than any power tool, it produces a clean vertical edge and it makes no dust. Beyond that thickness, switch to a jigsaw with a fine blade. Forcing a knife through a thick tile tears the granulate instead of cutting it, and the edge never recovers.
Two habits separate a clean job from a rough one. Mark and cut on the underside of the tile, so that any deviation ends up hidden and the wear face stays intact. And make several passes rather than one forced cut, letting the blade travel progressively through the thickness.
Tools and blades
- Long-blade utility knife. The default for tiles up to around 20 mm, and the finishing tool in every case. Change the blade often: a fresh blade markedly reduces fraying at the edges, and blades are cheaper than wasted tiles.
- Jigsaw. The reference tool for thicker tiles. Use a blade suited to rubber, and note that carbide-tipped blades last considerably longer and cut more cleanly than standard steel ones.
- Circular saw. Worth setting up when the tiles are thick or when a project involves a large number of straight cuts. Set the cutting depth precisely so the blade does not run deeper than the material.
- Band saw. Useful for long straight cuts and, with a fine blade, for curved work around columns and fittings.
- Hand saw. A fine-toothed hand saw will do the job on occasional cuts, at the cost of considerably more effort.
Working with a jigsaw
Set the speed to a moderate level. Running fast heats the rubber, and hot rubber deforms and welds to the blade instead of parting cleanly. Guide the saw properly for straight cuts, and use a guide rail wherever the run is long; freehand cuts wander on a compressible material far more than they do on timber. Keep vibration to a minimum: it costs accuracy and it wears the blade prematurely.
Finishing the edges
Once the cuts are made, the edges usually need refining. A utility knife is the right tool to pare back irregular or rough sections, working in shallow passes rather than trying to remove material in one go. Depending on the floor build-up, an adhesive finish may be appropriate to keep the tiles in position and prevent movement over time. On interlocking systems, check that the cut edge still allows the adjoining tile to seat properly before committing to the whole row.
Do not cut away the performance you paid for
This is the point that separates a professional installation from a domestic one. A rubber tile is certified as a system, at a stated thickness and build-up.
- On a playground, the impact-attenuating surface is specified against the free height of fall of the equipment above it and tested to EN 1177. Reducing thickness locally, or filling a gap with an offcut of a different tile, changes the critical fall height of that area.
- Where a reaction-to-fire classification applies, reproduce it exactly as certified, smoke index included, and do not mix references with different classifications in the same room.
- Cut tiles belong at the perimeter, not in the middle of the traffic zone, and offcuts narrower than roughly half a tile tend to lift over time.

Safety and the work area
Rubber cutting is low-risk work done badly and a genuine hazard done carelessly. Wear protective gloves, safety glasses and hearing protection where power tools are in use. Keep a vacuum running to remove crumb and residue: rubber granulate underfoot is slippery, and a clean work area is a safer and faster one. Never use a chainsaw or any tool not intended for the material.
