Which leg machine to buy first
If the budget allows only one guided leg station, buy the leg press. It carries a materially higher utilisation rate than the hack squat, serves a wider audience from beginner to advanced, and loads the leg musculature more completely. The hack squat is a specialisation purchase: it excels at the quadriceps but only earns its floor area once a meaningful share of your membership trains for strength or physique. Our working rule is a leg press from the first member, and a hack squat from around a hundred active members or where the venue is explicitly positioned on strength training.

Rail geometry: the specification datasheets omit
The difference between a converging and a parallel hack squat is not marketing. It is a mechanical choice that affects the knees of your members under heavy load.

If your gym still runs a strictly parallel rail hack squat and members load it heavily, plan its replacement. Floor and layout
A loaded hack squat concentrates several hundred kilograms on about three square metres, with plates being loaded and unloaded beside the frame. Specify a rubber tile of 25 to 40 mm under and around the station: a 25 mm tile at 1,000 kg per cubic metre lists at 32 EUR per square metre excluding VAT and a 40 mm weightlifting tile at 38.50 EUR. Allow clear access on both sides for loading discs, and position a plate tree within reach so plates are not left on the floor. On an upper floor, verify the permissible imposed load before positioning heavy leg stations.
Frequently asked questions
Hack squat or leg press for a 200 m2 gym?
Leg press first, in almost every case. It has the higher utilisation rate, serves a wider membership and covers more muscle groups. Add the hack squat when the strength oriented share of your membership justifies a specialised quadriceps station.
Does a hack squat replace barbell squats?
No. It removes the stabilisation demand and fixes the path, which is exactly why it suits an unsupervised floor and exactly why it does not replace a rack for members who train the competition lifts. Specify both if your positioning is strength led.
What load capacity should I specify?
300 to 400 kg for a commercial floor. A 200 kg ceiling looks adequate against average member loads but excludes the strongest members, and capacity is far cheaper to buy at the outset than to replace later.
How much maintenance does a leg station need?
Rail cleaning and lubrication monthly, bearing inspection annually, and upholstery replacement as it compresses. Plate loaded leg stations have no cables, which is why their maintenance profile is lighter than a selectorised equivalent and their service life longer.
