How to Choose a Professional Sports Equipment Supplier

by Michaël Galy / Wednesday, 02 April 2025 / Published in Conseils d'aménagement
Light In Fitness - Votre Fournisseur d'Équipements Sportifs Professionnels en Centre-Val de Loire

Choosing a supplier for a professional sports facility is a different exercise from buying equipment. The machines matter, but what determines whether the project lands on time and on budget is the chain behind them: who manufactures, who certifies, who draws the layout, who installs, and who supplies the spare part three years later. Light In Fitness has been equipping professional operators since 2013, with a single point of contact across that whole chain.

This guide sets out what a professional buyer should expect from an equipment supplier, and how to test a quotation against those expectations before signing it.

Who buys professional sports equipment, and why that changes the specification

Gym operators, cross-training boxes, hotels, holiday parks, local authorities, schools, clubs, rehabilitation centres, armed forces and property developers all buy sports equipment, and almost none of them buy the same thing. A hotel wellness room and a municipal outdoor circuit share nothing except the requirement that the equipment survives unsupervised use by people the operator has never met.

That single requirement is what separates professional equipment from everything else, and it is why the standards below are not paperwork.

Standards: what actually applies, and what does not

Indoor strength and cardio equipment for professional use falls under EN ISO 20957-1, class S. Class S covers equipment intended for supervised or commercial environments, and it is the only acceptable class for a facility open to third parties. Class H equipment is domestic and has no place in a professional installation, whatever the datasheet calls it.

Worth clearing up while we are here: class I under the same standard is a professional class for inclusive access, not an intensity tier above class S. Suppliers occasionally present it as an upgrade. It is not one.

Outdoor equipment splits by user. Permanently installed outdoor fitness equipment for adults falls under EN 16630. Children’s playground equipment falls under EN 1176-1, with the impact-absorbing surfacing beneath it covered by EN 1177. These are distinct standards for distinct products, and a supplier who blurs them inside a single quotation is telling you something about how the site will inspect later.

Indoor sports flooring adds a reaction to fire requirement. Our indoor floor tiles carry a Bfl-s1 classification, and the smoke index is part of that classification, not an optional suffix. A specification quoting a fire class without its smoke index has not been read properly.

The catalogue, by area of the facility

Equipment type Typical products
Cardio Treadmills, cross trainers, rowing machines, air bikes, indoor cycling bikes
Selectorised strength Leg press, shoulder press, pec fly, chest press, cable stations
Free weights and racks Olympic barbells, dumbbells, wall-mounted racks, cross-training cages
Outdoor equipment Fitness trails, ninja and obstacle courses, stainless steel outdoor machines
Sports flooring Rubber tiles, flooring rolls, tatami mats, lifting platforms
Specific zones Playgrounds, aquatic fitness equipment, cold plunge and wellness

The ranges are organised the same way on the site: strength training machines, cardio equipment, rubber gym flooring tiles and outdoor fitness trails. Most projects draw on at least three of them, which is the whole case for buying from one source rather than four.

What a serious supplier establishes before quoting

A price list is not a project. Before a professional quotation can mean anything, someone has to establish the usable floor area, the ceiling height, the delivery access route, the floor loading, the intended throughput and the user profile. Those six facts change the equipment mix far more than any preference does.

Our process runs as a plan study, then a 3D layout of the room, then a costed proposal covering equipment, flooring, installation and commissioning. Customisation, where it earns its place, covers colours, engraving and logos, plus bespoke module configurations on outdoor and cross-training structures.

After handover: the part most quotations leave out

Professional equipment is bought for a service life measured in years of continuous use, which makes two questions decisive at purchase and invisible at demonstration. Are spare parts available for this range, and for how long? And who carries out the maintenance?

Ask both before you compare prices. A machine that cannot be repaired in year four was never the cheaper machine.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment do you supply for a commercial gym?

Selectorised strength machines, plate-loaded machines, cardio, free weights and racks, lifting platforms, flooring, functional training equipment and stainless steel outdoor machines. Indoor equipment is specified to EN ISO 20957-1 class S.

Do you supply public bodies?

Yes. Local authorities, schools, higher education, hospitals, rehabilitation centres and defence establishments make up a substantial part of our work. Outdoor adult equipment is supplied to EN 16630, and playground equipment to EN 1176-1 with EN 1177 surfacing.

Do you handle installation?

Yes, from the plan study and layout drawing through to installation and commissioning. Delivery and installation terms depend on the destination country and are stated on the quotation rather than promised in general.

Do you offer trade pricing?

Pricing is quoted per project, business to business and excluding VAT. Volume and configuration both affect it, which is why we quote against a plan instead of publishing one trade rate.

Getting a quotation

Send us the plan of the space, the type of facility and the user profile you are designing for. We come back with a layout, an equipment schedule and a costed proposal covering supply and installation. Request a quote and start with the drawing rather than the price list.
