Rowing machines for commercial gyms: how to specify them

by Michaël Galy / Monday, 29 July 2024 / Published in Rameurs
Rowing Musculation - Un Équipement Incontournable pour une Entraînement Complet

The rowing machine is the only station on a commercial floor that trains the legs, the trunk, the back and the arms in one continuous low impact stroke, which is why it earns its space in facilities that have very little of it. It is also frequently confused with the seated row, a strength station that trains a pulling pattern against a stack. This guide covers the ergometer: what it delivers, the four resistance technologies and what each one costs you in noise and maintenance, the standard that applies, and how to place it.

Rowing machine or seated row?

Worth settling first, because the two are specified from different budgets and sit in different zones. A rowing ergometer is cardio equipment: a sliding seat, a footplate, a handle on a chain or belt, and a resistance unit. A seated row is a strength station: a fixed seat, a chest pad, and a selectorised or plate loaded resistance. Both train pulling, but the ergometer trains a whole body cyclical effort for conditioning, while the seated row loads the back for hypertrophy and strength. A complete floor has both, in different areas.

What the ergometer delivers

A genuinely full body stroke

The drive starts in the legs, transfers through a braced trunk, and finishes with the back and arms. Latissimus dorsi, rhomboids, posterior deltoids, biceps, trunk musculature, quadriceps and glutes all contribute in a single movement. Few machines cover that much muscle mass per square metre of floor.

Cardiovascular conditioning at low joint impact

The stroke is continuous and the feet never leave the footplate, so there is no ground reaction impact as there is in running. That makes the machine programmable for older members, heavier members and members with knee or ankle issues, which broadens the population that can use your conditioning area. It reduces impact loading; it does not make injury impossible, and a rounded lumbar spine under a hard drive is a well known way to hurt a back on a rowing machine. Technique instruction is part of the offer, not an optional extra.

Throughput

Sessions are short, the machine needs no setup, and it suits interval formats, class use and warm up equally. In a small facility that flexibility is worth more than any single feature.

The four resistance technologies

Air resistance is self scaling: the harder the stroke, the higher the resistance, which makes it the reference for competitive and interval training. It is the loudest option and moves air, which matters if the machines sit near a studio or a reception. Water resistance gives a similar self scaling feel with a softer sound signature that many members prefer, in a heavier unit that needs the water treating periodically. Magnetic resistance is the quietest and the most precisely settable, which is why it dominates in rehabilitation and hotel settings, and it is the least dependent on stroke rate. Hydraulic resistance is compact and cheap but has the least authentic stroke feel and is rarely the right answer for a staffed commercial floor. Our professional rowing machines cover these technologies, and the Xebex air resistance range is the reference for the interval and functional segment.

Construction and what wears

A commercial ergometer is built on a steel frame with a precision seat rail, sealed bearings and a chain or belt drive. The parts that wear are predictable: the seat rollers, the handle chain or belt, the footplate straps and the damper mechanism. Specify a machine whose wear parts are individually replaceable and stocked, because that is the difference between a ten minute service and a machine out of use for a fortnight. Padded seats and adjustable footplates are what keep the machine usable across body sizes.

Consoles and data

The monitor is not a luxury on this category, it is the training tool. Split time, stroke rate, distance and watts are what allow a coach to prescribe and a member to pace. If you run classes or challenges, check that the consoles can be read at a distance and that the data can leave the machine in a form your systems can use.

Standards and compliance

Indoor equipment for a supervised, publicly accessible facility is specified to EN ISO 20957-1 class S, together with the part of the standard covering rowing machines specifically. That is the current reference; older documentation still citing the withdrawn EN 957 numbering alone should be treated as out of date and checked. Compliance is not a formality: it is what your insurer and the national market surveillance authority will look for after an incident, and non compliant equipment exposes the operator to liability under the rules applicable in your market.

Maintenance in service

Daily wipe down of the seat, rail and handle. Weekly inspection of the chain or belt tension, the footplate straps and the seat rollers. Periodic water treatment on water units and dust clearing on air units, since the flywheel housing collects it and dust is the main cause of an air machine going noisy. Damaged parts get replaced immediately rather than at the next planned service; a machine with a worn strap is a machine that will be used anyway.

Placement

Rowing machines need clear length behind the rail for the seat travel and for the user to get on and off, plus circulation. Keep them off the direct line to the studio if you have chosen air resistance, because of the noise. If you run class formats on them, group them in a row with the consoles aligned rather than scattering them through the cardio deck. Flooring under the rail should be firm; a soft mat under a rowing frame makes the machine rock.

Frequently asked questions

How many do we need?

It depends on your formats rather than your membership. A general cardio deck needs enough that one is normally free at peak; a facility running rowing intervals in class needs one per participant place. Those are very different numbers, so decide the format first.

Which resistance for a hotel or a residence?

Magnetic, in almost every case. Quiet, low maintenance, no water, and settable for a population that arrives untrained and unsupervised.

Is it suitable for rehabilitation settings?

Yes, with adjustable resistance and supervision. The controlled, low impact stroke and the precisely settable load are exactly why rehabilitation centres use ergometers, but the range and the load are clinical decisions.

Does higher purchase price pay back?

Through service life and downtime rather than through the training effect. A commercial machine with available spare parts stays in service for years and can be repaired in place, which is what protects the asset and the member experience.

Specifying your cardio deck

Tell us the surface area, the ceiling height, whether you run class formats, and your member profile, and we will propose the machine count, the technologies and the layout. See the professional cardio range or request a quote and we will size it with you.
