Description
The TRAINER wheelchair accessible stepper and bike brings a stepping movement and a pedalling movement together on one outdoor station, fully usable from a wheelchair without any transfer. It strengthens the legs and glutes, engages the hips, thighs and abdominals, and improves cardiorespiratory capacity. Rated easy on the difficulty scale, it is designed as an entry point rather than a challenge, which is what an inclusive circuit needs at its start.
Not requiring a transfer is the specification that decides whether an accessible station is genuinely used. Equipment that requires a user to leave the chair depends on assistance being available, and in an unsupervised public park it usually is not. Here the user rolls up to the station and trains from the chair.

Designing an accessible fitness circuit
The station is intended for urban parks and municipal fitness areas aiming to offer a complete circuit accessible to people with reduced mobility. Two conditions decide whether that ambition is met on the ground. The first is the approach: the path to the station must be firm, level and continuous, with no step, no kerb lip and no loose gravel margin, and there must be turning space to align with the working position. The second is the surfacing within the 440 x 352 cm safety zone, which must be impact attenuating to EN 1177 and sized to the free fall height while remaining rollable for a wheelchair.
Because the station combines a cardiovascular and a lower limb strengthening function, it is a natural starting point for the circuit and pairs well with upper body pull, press and rotation stations so that a complete session can be performed without leaving the chair. Anchoring is into concrete foundations sized to the ground conditions, so a survey is advisable before ordering.
Frequently asked questions
Is a transfer out of the wheelchair needed?
No. Both the stepping and the pedalling functions are used directly from the chair, which is what makes the station viable on an unsupervised public site.
Can standing users use it too?
The station is designed around wheelchair access. In a mixed circuit it is normally installed alongside stations usable by standing users so the whole area serves the whole population.
What surfacing is required?
An impact attenuating surface to EN 1177 across the safety zone, sized to the free fall height and firm enough to roll on. We can specify and supply the surfacing with the equipment as part of the project study.
