Description
The TRAINER arm wheel is an outdoor upper limb station designed for seated and reduced mobility users, measuring 140 x 33 x 150 cm and certified to EN 16630:2015-06. Two rotating handwheels are set at a height that a wheelchair user can reach without transferring, so shoulder, arm and trunk work becomes possible inside a standard public fitness area rather than in a separate specialist facility. The action is continuous and low impact, which also makes it a cardio respiratory station rather than purely a strength one.

Designing an accessible outdoor fitness area
Accessibility in outdoor fitness is decided long before the equipment arrives. A station that a wheelchair user can operate is useless if the approach path is gravel, if there is a kerb at the edge of the safety surfacing, or if the wheels sit above a raised plinth. Specify the arm wheel with a level, firm and continuous approach on at least one side, with the surfacing carried across the whole 440 x 333 cm safety area so that a chair can be positioned square to the handles.
- Rotating handles for shoulders, arms, upper back and trunk
- Continuous low impact movement, also trains cardio respiratory endurance
- Easy difficulty rating, usable by first time and older visitors
- Generous wheel diameter for a full, smooth arm circle
- No stack, no selector, nothing to adjust or vandalise
Construction and operator duties
Steel is shot blasted and hot dip galvanised before the two coat polyester finish is applied, so corrosion protection sits under the paint. That build is what allows an unsupervised installation in a public park to remain serviceable for years with only cosmetic touch up.
The moving parts here take a high cycle count, since a rotating station is used continuously rather than in discrete repetitions. Include the wheel bearings and pivot housings in the routine operational inspection, and record the annual main inspection as required for permanently installed publicly accessible outdoor fitness equipment.
Frequently asked questions
Can a wheelchair user reach the handles without transferring?
That is the purpose of the design. The wheels are positioned for seated operation, and the station is specified for accessible fitness trails and inclusive municipal fitness areas. Approach surfacing and clearance must be planned to match, which is covered on the installation drawing.
Is the resistance adjustable?
No. The movement is unresisted rotation, so intensity is controlled by speed and by session duration. That is deliberate for public equipment used without supervision and without instruction.
Does it need to be certified for inclusive use?
The station is certified to EN 16630:2015-06 by TUV Rheinland, the standard covering permanently installed outdoor fitness equipment. Accessibility of the site as a whole, including paths and surfacing, is the responsibility of the scheme designer and should be checked against the applicable national accessibility rules.
