Description
Solaris is a two level rope structure carried by four curved steel arches meeting at a common upper node, 8.8 by 8.8 m in plan and 7.2 m high. The two play levels are separated by reinforced rubber membranes and four layers of plastic mesh of around 10 mm total thickness, which is what allows children to occupy the upper volume while others play below.
The arches are supported by steel columns and the whole frame is hot dip galvanised and powder coated tube of 168.3 mm diameter. The lower level sits below 3.0 m. Dense rope nets with openings of no more than 125 x 125 mm form the climbing surfaces, and communication nets connect the levels to the lower modules. Decorative HPL or HDPE panels with a space theme are fitted to the structure.
Ropes are braided and bonded polyamide of 18 mm diameter reinforced with galvanised steel strands. Connectors are plastic and aluminium, with stainless steel and painted steel fixings at the column anchor points.

Why a two level rope structure
Separating the volume into two levels raises the capacity of a single footprint. Younger children stay under 3.0 m on the lower level, older ones work the upper nets, and the rubber and mesh membranes stop objects and feet passing between the two. For a municipality this means one item of equipment serves the whole 5 to 14 age bracket at a single supervised point.
The 13.8 by 13.8 m safety area has to be surfaced for a free height of fall of 2.85 m under EN 1177. Foundations are 1.0 m deep, so buried services and root protection zones are checked before the setting out is fixed.
Frequently asked questions
How large is the safety area?
13.8 by 13.8 m, to be covered with an impact attenuating surface rated for 2.85 m.
Why are the net openings limited to 125 x 125 mm?
Dense mesh limits entrapment risk and gives a continuous climbing surface, which is what makes the upper level usable as a play deck rather than only as a route.
What finish protects the steel?
Hot dip galvanising with a powder coated finish over it: the galvanising provides corrosion protection and the powder coat carries the colour.
