Description
This 8 mm black rubber flooring roll is the standard covering for gymnasiums, fitness rooms, CrossFit areas and cardio and strength zones. Rolls cover large areas faster than tiles and leave fewer joints, which is why they remain the most widely used floor covering in fitness facilities.
The composition is what determines performance. The roll is made from SBR rubber granules of a selected fraction, recovered from recycled tyres, bound with a PUR polyurethane binder. That combination produces a product with a neutral odour, confirmed by a hygiene certificate, which matters in enclosed rooms where a rubber smell would otherwise persist for weeks after installation.
Functionally the roll does three jobs. It resists impact and damage, so dropped plates and dumbbells do not reach the substrate. It is non slip, which is relevant in damp conditions and is why this type of covering also appears in ski stations and ice rinks. And it damps vibration, so noise transmitted to adjacent and lower rooms is reduced. Installation is quick, which shortens the closure period when an existing room is being refitted.

Choosing rolls rather than tiles
Rolls suit large continuous areas. Fewer joints means less dirt ingress, a cleaner appearance under uniform lighting and no risk of individual tiles migrating under sled or trolley traffic. Tiles remain preferable where a floor has to be lifted in sections, or where different thicknesses are needed within one room.
Thickness selection follows use. At 4 to 8 mm the roll protects the substrate and controls noise for cardio, functional and general strength areas, and it is also used in exhibition halls and high traffic spaces. Where bars are dropped, a thicker tile is specified locally over or alongside the roll rather than increasing the roll thickness across the whole room. EPDM roll coverings are also available where a coloured or UV resistant surface is required.
Frequently asked questions
What area does one roll cover?
12.5 m2, from a roll of 10 x 1.25 m.
Does the flooring smell after installation?
The PUR bound SBR formulation has a neutral odour, confirmed by a hygiene certificate.
Is 8 mm enough for a weights area?
For general strength and cardio use, yes. Where barbells are dropped, specify a thicker rubber tile in the drop zone.
