Modular Pump Track: A Versatile Wheeled Sports Circuit
A pump track is a closed loop of rollers and banked turns ridden without pedalling: riders generate speed by pumping the terrain with their body weight. It works with BMX and mountain bikes, skateboards, inline skates and scooters, which makes it one of the few outdoor installations that serves a six-year-old and a teenager on the same surface. Modular pump tracks take that concept and turn it into a kit of prefabricated elements you bolt together on a prepared surface, indoors or outdoors, instead of a permanent earthwork.
Who a modular pump track is for
Local authorities building a youth sports area, campsites and holiday parks looking for an activity that runs itself, schools, sports clubs, shopping centres and event organisers who need a temporary attraction. Because the modules are demountable, the same track can be reconfigured, extended or relocated, which is exactly what a fixed concrete or asphalt track cannot do. You can browse the range in our pump tracks category.
Construction and materials
The modules are made of GRP – glass-fibre reinforced polyester. The material was chosen for a specific reason: it holds its shape under repeated impact, it does not rot or corrode, and it takes a moulded friction surface that gives grip to tyres and wheels while limiting abrasion injuries in a fall. Elements connect to each other with connecting plates and anchor pins, so a layout can be assembled, opened up and rearranged without specialist plant.
None of the materials used requires special treatment for disposal at end of life.
Technical data
| Largest element | 2000 x 1300 x 900 mm |
|---|---|
| Heaviest element | 65 kg |
| Impact area | Impact-attenuating surfacing required around the track |
| Spare parts availability | 10 years |
| Fixings | JS-500 treated or stainless steel screws |
The heaviest single element at 65 kg is the figure that decides your handling method: two people can position a module, but a full layout is still a delivery that needs vehicle access to the site.
Surfacing and the impact area
A pump track is not installed on bare ground. It needs a flat, load-bearing base and an impact area around the riding line. Where children are the intended users, impact-attenuating surfacing to EN 1177 is the reference for the fall area, while the play equipment itself is covered by EN 1176-1. These are two separate standards and they are not interchangeable – a supplier quoting only one of them has not specified the whole installation. Our playground surfacing and outdoor sports flooring ranges cover both the safety surface and the surrounding circulation areas.
Maintenance
GRP needs no painting, no varnishing and no seasonal treatment, and the surface can be washed down and disinfected – which is why these tracks are common in indoor and shared-use venues. What remains is inspection: fixings, connecting plates, surface condition and the impact area. Step up the inspection schedule where use is heavy or the site is unsupervised, and do not open the track to riders until installation or maintenance work is finished.
Frequently asked questions
Can a modular pump track be installed indoors?
Yes. The modules are equally suited to indoor halls and outdoor sites, provided the base is flat and load-bearing and the impact area is treated the same way in both cases.
How long does assembly take?
That depends entirely on the number of modules and on site access, so it is quoted per project. The assembly method itself is simple: connecting plates and anchor pins, no specialist trade required.
Can the layout be changed later?
Yes – that is the main advantage of a modular system over a poured track. Modules can be reconfigured, added to or moved to another site.
Which age groups can use it?
A pump track suits a very wide age range, from young children on scooters to adult riders. The intended user group should be defined before the layout is designed, because it drives the choice of modules and the size of the impact area.
