A pump track is a closed loop of rollers and banked turns ridden without pedalling: riders generate speed by pumping the terrain with their body weight. It works with BMX and mountain bikes, skateboards, inline skates and scooters, which makes it one of the few outdoor installations that serves a six-year-old and a teenager on the same surface. Construction and materials

The modules are made of GRP – glass-fibre reinforced polyester. The material was chosen for a specific reason: it holds its shape under repeated impact, it does not rot or corrode, and it takes a moulded friction surface that gives grip to tyres and wheels while limiting abrasion injuries in a fall. Elements connect to each other with connecting plates and anchor pins, so a layout can be assembled, opened up and rearranged without specialist plant.

The heaviest single element at 65 kg is the figure that decides your handling method: two people can position a module, but a full layout is still a delivery that needs vehicle access to the site.

Surfacing and the impact area

A pump track is not installed on bare ground. It needs a flat, load-bearing base and an impact area around the riding line. Where children are the intended users, impact-attenuating surfacing to EN 1177 is the reference for the fall area, while the play equipment itself is covered by EN 1176-1. These are two separate standards and they are not interchangeable – a supplier quoting only one of them has not specified the whole installation. Maintenance

GRP needs no painting, no varnishing and no seasonal treatment, and the surface can be washed down and disinfected – which is why these tracks are common in indoor and shared-use venues. What remains is inspection: fixings, connecting plates, surface condition and the impact area. Step up the inspection schedule where use is heavy or the site is unsupervised, and do not open the track to riders until installation or maintenance work is finished.
