How to Choose the Best Strength Machines for Your Gym

by Michaël Galy / Thursday, 18 July 2024 / Published in Guides Acheteurs
Comment choisir les meilleurs appareils de musculation pour votre salle de sport

When it comes to equipping a gym, choosing the right strength machines is decisive. They have to meet the needs of your members, but they also have to be durable, ergonomic and worth what you pay for them. This guide sets out what to look for so the decision is an informed one rather than a catalogue reflex.

Why the quality of strength machines matters

Investing in high-quality strength equipment is what protects both member satisfaction and the lifespan of your fleet. Robust, well-designed machines allow safe and effective sessions, reduce the risk of injury and let users perform at their best. The opposite is equally true and far more expensive: a frame that flexes, a pad that tears or a cable that needs replacing every season costs more in downtime and lost members than the initial saving.

For a supervised commercial facility, the reference is EN ISO 20957-1 class S, the professional class for high-frequency use. Ask for it in writing at the quotation stage rather than discovering its absence after delivery.

Selection criteria

  1. Robustness and durability
    • Choose machines built from high-quality materials such as reinforced steel.
    • Ask the supplier for reference sites of a similar size and visit one; the wear on a three-year-old floor tells you more than any brochure.
  2. Ergonomics
    • Make sure the machines are comfortable and straightforward to use, including for a member training without supervision.
    • Choose machines with adjustable settings so they fit every body type, and check that the adjustment can be made while seated.
  3. Features
    • Look for additional features such as heart rate sensors, built-in training programmes and LCD displays where they serve your audience.
    • Multi-station units can be a good option to save space and offer more exercise variety, particularly in hotels, corporate rooms and residential facilities.

One criterion is missing from most checklists and belongs near the top: spare parts. Ask how long pads, cables, bearings and electronics remain available, and who fits them.

Comparing the main brands

  • Bodytone: known for robust, innovative equipment, with a wide range of machines suited to every fitness level.
  • Lexco Fitness: decades of experience behind durable, ergonomic machines built for intensive use.
  • Light In Fitness: manufacturer and distributor of professional ranges, combining its own production with selected partner brands so a single supplier can cover the whole room.

Comparing brands matters less than comparing them on the same specification. Put the load range, the frame section, the upholstery and the warranty side by side before the price.

Installation and maintenance

  • Installation
    • Use professionals to install the equipment so it works correctly from day one.
    • Plan the layout of the room to optimise the space and keep circulation clear between stations.
  • Maintenance
    • Clean the machines regularly to prevent the build-up of dust and sweat.
    • Carry out monthly checks to identify and repair worn or damaged parts before they fail.

Where to start on the catalogue

Most projects begin with the professional strength training machines that define the identity of the floor, then add selectorised machines for members who train without a coach, and finish with weight benches, which are the least glamorous and most used items in the room.

Frequently asked questions

How many machines does a floor need?

Size the fleet against attendance at your busiest hour and the average session length, not against total membership. Duplicating the most popular stations usually beats adding a new family of machines.

Plate-loaded or selectorised?

Selectorised machines suit beginners and high turnover; plate-loaded machines suit strength-focused members and cost less per station. Most floors need a mix, weighted towards the audience you actually serve.

What should a warranty cover?

Read what is covered rather than the headline duration: frame, moving parts, upholstery and electronics usually carry different terms, and the difference between them is where disputes happen.

Equipping for the long term

Follow these principles and you will equip your gym with strength machines that meet your members expectations and improve their experience. Choosing the right equipment is a long-term investment in customer satisfaction and in the success of the business.

Send us your surface area, your type of facility and your target audience, and we will come back with a layout and a costed proposal. Request a quote to get started.
