Sports equipment for sailing clubs and watersports centres: dryland training by the water

A sailing club does not need a weights room: it needs a space where a whole group warms up before launching, and where the equipment stays outdoors all year facing the salt. Those two constraints – simultaneous group use and permanent exposure – rule out indoor gym equipment and point towards multi-station structures in 316L stainless steel. Light In Fitness manufactures 98 references in 316L, under lifetime guarantee, from 1,499 euros excluding VAT for a pull-up station.

A reference network: French sailing in figures

France runs one of the densest club networks in Europe, and its published figures give a useful sense of scale to any club or watersports centre planning a dryland training area.

Indicator Value
Clubs affiliated to the French sailing federation 1,133
Accredited sailing schools 375
Licence holders 333,312
Participants more than 3.3 million, half of them received in affiliated clubs
Events in the federal calendar around 5,000
National championships 90

That network sits alongside 488 coastal marinas in mainland France, whose hardstandings frequently host a watersports centre or a club. Projects are often set up jointly by the club and the harbour operator or the municipality: see the page sports equipment for marinas and yacht harbours.

What sailing demands physically

The sport loads identifiable muscle chains, and dryland preparation is built from those rather than from a catalogue.

Demand Situation on the water Matching station
Core stability Hiking out, helming position, compensating heel Core and abdominal station
Posterior chain Prolonged hiking, lifting the centreboard Back extension bench
Pulling and back Sheeting in, trimming, hoisting Pull-up bar, power tower
Shoulders and pressing Pole work, carrying gear Dip bars, multi-purpose station
Grip Holding a sheet, working the wheel Multi-grip pull-up bars
Power and reactivity Tacking, moving around the boat Plyometric platform and boxes

A stainless 7-grip pull-up bar covers both pulling and grip on its own, with seven hand positions, which avoids lining up several stations for the same movement.

Size for the group, not for the individual

This is the fundamental difference from a gym project. A sailing school rotates groups of trainees through tight sessions; a club warms up a whole fleet before the start. A single-user machine creates a queue; a multi-station structure puts ten to twenty people to work at the same time.

Users at the same time Configuration Price excl. VAT
4 to 6 Stainless power tower, chin-up, dips and flying pull-up 3,999 euros
8 to 12 Wall-mounted stainless functional rig 5,999 euros
12 to 16 Freestanding stainless functional rig, 4 stations Plus 11,999 euros
16 to 24 Stainless C8 street workout cage 16,999 euros
24 and above Stainless C12 street workout cage 24,999 euros

Useful additions to a warm-up circuit: stainless AB Core station at 3,499 euros excluding VAT, stainless back extension bench at 1,999 euros, Victory plyometric platform at 3,999 euros. The full range is on the page stainless steel street workout equipment.

The equipment stays outdoors, winter included

A watersports club has neither a heated room nor storage space to devote to strength and conditioning equipment. The equipment is installed once and stays in place, which shifts the question from purchase price to durability.

Stainless steel 316L contains 2.0 to 2.5 % molybdenum under EN 10088, an element absent from 304. In the formula PREN = Cr + 3.3 Mo + 16 N, that puts its pitting resistance index between 23.1 and 28.5, against 17.5 to 20.8 for 304. Against galvanised steel, the comparison is the consumption of zinc: up to 25 microns a year in corrosivity category CX under ISO 9223. The stainless structures in the range carry a lifetime guarantee, against twenty years for steel structures. The values, the corrosivity categories and the special cases are set out on the page how to choose a stainless steel grade.

Equipment installed on ground accessible to the public also falls under EN 16630. Certificates of conformity and test reports are supplied with the offer, and the periodic inspection obligations that follow from the standard are part of the operator’s safety register.

Funding a club project

An affiliated club is usually a non-profit association with limited investment capacity of its own. The arrangement generally runs through the municipality or the local authority that owns the land, with co-funding. National and regional sports funding schemes for local facilities exist in most countries, and their criteria, rates and application windows change from one campaign to the next: check the terms in force with your national sports agency or federation before building the budget.

As soon as a public body is party to the contract, public procurement rules apply, with the timetable that goes with them. Whatever the route, the same technical documents are required: footprints, safety zones, certificates of conformity, material grades and anchoring details. They are supplied with the quotation.

Frequently asked questions

Does a club need a building to install a dryland training area?

No. The 316L stainless range is designed for permanent outdoor installation, with no winter storage. That is the right answer for a club with neither spare covered space nor staff to dismantle and store equipment between seasons.

How many people can one structure take at a time?

It depends on the number of stations. A power tower takes four to six users, a wall-mounted functional rig eight to twelve, a C8 street workout cage sixteen to twenty-four. Size the structure on the largest single session, not on total club membership.

Is the equipment suitable for under-age trainees at a sailing school?

Outdoor fitness equipment falls under EN 16630, which sets the safety requirements for use in free access. Bar heights and safety zones are chosen according to the intended users; state the age groups you receive when you ask for a quotation so that the configuration matches.

How does this differ from standard street workout equipment?

The material. A galvanised or powder-coated structure is fine inland; by salt water the zinc is consumed and the paint lifts from the edges. Stainless 316L is the grade that withstands permanent chloride exposure, and that is what justifies the difference in purchase price.

Can a structure be adapted to a narrow hardstanding?

Yes. Wall-mounted rigs are fixed against an existing building and free up ground space. For a configuration outside the catalogue, bespoke manufacturing covers design and production from the site plan.

Discussing your project

Send us the site plan, the size of your largest session and the age groups you receive: the quotation comes back with footprints, safety zones and the technical documents a funding application will need.
